Has anyone else had experience with Yoyo Loaches that seem to have ADHD?

I got a worrietext from my partner earlier today with the attached photo saying she heard a really loud thud and then saw this guy laying like this. Turned out it swam head on into the glass and knocked itself the hell out.

It is back to normal now, but certainly had us worried.

Test the water is what I'd do first! Do you have any other fish in there?

I've lost a lot of the small ones to jumping out and have been told they can get up a bit of speed.

My remaining two have slowed down but before they always reminded me of kids after the red cordial.

The water seems all fine; Ph of 6.9, 0 Ammonia, 0 Nitrates, 0 Nitrites, hardness 5-6 DKH.

He is still swimming a little wonky, will be keeping a close eye on it. after getting a bit more info it sounds like he tried to jump out and hit the lid on the tank with enough force to lift it off the tank and back down with an impressive Thud.

I have alot of other fish in tha tank;

9 neon tetras, 5 bristlenose (that have recently spawned), 3 electric blue rams, 4 siamese algae eaters, 3 yoyo loachs and heaven knows how many shrimp.

Its a shallowish 240 litre so its possibly a little crowded. im trying to sort out a rack to control the breeding and raising of the bristlenose Fry, but cash is a bit tight due to getting married in about 5 months.

My yo yo have narcolepsy- sometimes I find them laying on their sides & they look dead only to poke them - then they swim off normall.
I also notice they sleep head to tail in pairs in a piece of pipe I have in there & there that tight I think they are stuck - once disturbed they swim off fine.
Odd fish !

How long has the tank been established? Should have at least some low readings for Nitrates.

Its been established for about 12 months. I forgot to mention is has several plants, some quite fast growing that eat up nitrates as fast as they are produced.

thats exactly what i was thinking and was gonna say the same....

even with plants you pretty much have to have some sort of reading... pretty much unheard of unless something is wrong.... did you shake the nitrate test bottles for a good 60 secs like your shaking a cocktail mix ???? before testing ?

to achieve a zero nitrate you'd need a good size denitrator on your tank or for example  have a 6x2x2 full of plants and only have a handful of small fish...

then your DOCS (dissolved organic compounds) could well be building up un-noticed possibly causing problems later down the track.... unless of course your doing a reasonable water change regularly to replenish nutrients in the water and dilute DOCS...

just curious to see how a second nitrate test goes after shakin ???

Just did another nirate test and gave it a more thorough shake. Came back somewhere between 5 and 10 ppm. But the weekly water change is also due tomorrow. I spoke to a friend who works at Vebas and his response was just 'yeah, those things like to jump' edit: he also mentioned that the first sign i would see of water quality issues would be the shrimp dying or acting odd. They all seem pretty happy.

I always used to find mine laying upside down and was told it was 'normal' for them!
Love these crazy guys!

I had a cod that got spooked and knocked its self out. It was really scary to see it.
Yoyo's are pretty intense. The little buggers annoy everything else in the tank with their antics.

Lol lol - it's hard for a fish to look cool and insanely dangerous when there is a yoyo sniffing its butt 😬
