Jules - there is no progress unfortunately.

I have all my equipment sitting in a cupboard in boxes. The only piece missing is my lights that were ordered/paid for 6 weeks ago. Had to wait for them to come in from overseas to the distributor, and then shipped to me. Received an e-mail a week ago saying they have arrived and have been shipped. So hopefully should see them any day now (fingers crossed).

The tank is still sitting in the middle of the room. To say getting all the equipment has been a pain is an understatement. 6 week + wait for lights, 6 + weeks for my skimmer, multiple other items out of stock at all Australian vendors! But I am almost there.

The tank is still in the middle of the room because my lighting brackets need to be fixed to the wall and I don't want to lean over a 3' wide tank drilling into a wall.

As soon as the lights get here it was all happen very quickly and the tank will be filled within the week.

Decided I'm going to go down the premium live rock pathway. The Carib Sea Life Rock is in such low supply in Australia, was finding it extremely difficult to get the amounts in the type I wanted, I don't want to give the company my money when they have serviced the Australian market so poorly (my opinion). There's also a part of my brain that struggles with the concept of paying as much or slightly more for 'dead rock' and premium live rock - I'll deal with any pests that come my way.

#366268 South West Carpet Pythons - Free To Good Home

Posted by Peckoltia on 13 July 2018 - 09:58 AM

Thanks for the congratulations! not long now - due date the 23rd of this month.

All snakes have found new homes. While breeding Carpet Pythons was definitely something I enjoyed doing just to go through the experience from conditioning, pairing, mating, incubation, egg hatching and getting hatchies feeding. I would never do it again. The reptile trade is perth is essentially dead.

Hi

Long story short - after being messed around by countless people and offering these snakes to stores for an absolute steal. I have decided to offer my pair of adult SWCP's for free to the right home.

Any long term members of the forum that would like a free pair of SWCP's (you will have to pay the transfer fee's) or any young reptile keepers out there that would like to try their hand at breeding (please send a PM). I am being trusting in that the person will not on sell them immediately and would just like to see them go to someone who will enjoy them.

Both adults and have produced a viable clutch of eggs in the past. Actually nice looking snakes! They handle OK without being great, both are pigs, and love a feed, but once out are generally alright. Probably wouldn't recommend them with very young children.

I would much rather see these go to a PCS member or someone part of a pet society or a young keeper. I remember being a kid/student many years ago and if i can help out a budding young reptile keeper even better,

You will need a cat 3 license, and I would like these gone within the next week as we are expecting a child and would like these gone before then.

Once these are gone - I will have some young up for sale or free to good homes to young keepers. Bottom line is I would rather give these snakes away to people who will enjoy them rather than give them to stores that were completely unwilling to help me out to then on sell the snakes.

Please PM

Thanks Jules - I agree the wall looks mint.

Yeah it's a brutally long slog - the issue with living in Australia, there is no store that has it all (in my opinion). I've kept a spreadsheet of purchases etc and I am up to 20 or so different stores I have bought things from. It's the little things; for example buying my RODI filter and it only coming with an adapter for the laundry hose. Then needing to find one to attach to the garden faucet. There have also been some pretty serious waits for products to come back into stock. Having said that I have come across a lot of people that have been absolutely lovely to deal with!

All that aside it will be worth it in the end, and it is a first world problem, nothing really to complain about.

Nothing good happens quickly in this hobby, only bad things.

Wall has now been painted black, and I must say it really pops already with the black stand and the rest of the house being painted 'ivory white'. The light brackets are currently at the powder coaters, getting finished in 'satin black' like the stand. Should look pretty spectacular once the tank gets pushed back on the wall, putting a real focus on the tanks inhabitants.

My wife's instructions are 'don't blow anything up, don't set the house on fire, don't make it impossible to holiday anywhere'.

Yeah it's certainly not what most people have sitting in there garage, so far have been told by family and friends that I am either setting up a drug lab or a mad science experiment.

Thanks Delapool - the effort to get this thing off the ground has been immense so far. Almost there!

My skimmer finally arrived yesterday, after a very long wait. Ended up going with a Nyos Quantum 300 - beast of a skimmer, first thing I noticed was the sheer size and had me second guessing if i measured incorrectly and have it not fit in the sump! (full size lighter on top of the cup for a size reference) I must say, putting it together it feels very well made, solid and precise construction with no play in the pieces once put together. Really easy to assemble, took me all of 5 minutes with a flat head screw driver. Fits in the sump nicely, and looks the part next to the algae reactor. I turned the light on the algae reactor for a pic for no other reason than it looked awesome!

I'm still undecided whether I will run the algae reactor in the sump or having it external as it does take up a lot of room in the sump.

Finally some more progress - getting the wall drilled was a major headache, with my usual avenues unable to help me for the foreseeable future. Ended up getting one of my dads mates to help out, and must say he did a fantastic job with the 4 holes through a double brick wall - nice and straight and hardly a chip out of the plaster or the garage brick wall! really neat job. This was really holding me up.

The electrician is also at my house as I type this doing some jobs including doing all the wiring of the powerboards in the garage for all the equipment for the QT tank and sump/display! So some jobs are getting done. Wall will finally be painted this week also.

Once that's done things will start coming together very quickly!

On a side note my algae reactor arrived today, got an ITC ALR 3 - I must say it is bigger than I was expecting. Seems to be well made too. Also got a call from the delivery company my skimmer will finally be delivered today too! So things are starting to move quickly now!

Thanks for the kind words Jules - I crowed a bit early and have a leak in one of the glued joins which is a bit of a pain. Only a very slow leak, so will fix it once i empty the barrel on a water change in the next week or so.

The quarantine tank is now almost fully cycled, so may see the first fish move in this weekend or at the latest next! Which is exciting seeing as the time and money that I have spent. Be nice to actually have a fish to show for it!

Update - got the mixing station mostly plumbed. All dry fitted then glued. Only a couple very minor leaks which I have since rectified. Pretty happy with it and seems to be working a treat so far. The left barrel is SW and the right RODI. I like the 'closed loop' on the left as I can turn the pump on and really churn the water to either mix salt or get the water full of oxygen before a water change. Each drum holds 220L (~60gal). All that is left to do is clamp a flexible hose on the reducer and install drill a hole for the float switch to plumb the RODI line into so I don't flood my garage.
