Just out of curiosity..

Is it legal to take fish home from rivers/bays/estuaries etc..? Lets say i went fishing and hooked a really cool/nice fish and want to keep it as a pet. Is that legal, and if so, would I need a license for it etc..?

Cheers!
Kevin

If they have fishing size limits, they have to meet the size limit.
I believe you can grab stuff like rainbowfish in queensland as long as you stick to the bag limit, depends what you want to take some fish may have restrictions, but you can keep your bread and butter fish as long as it is size.

I guess it depends on where and what it is.....

If its freshwater your fishing, you need a freshwater anglers licence.... If it's redfin or carp, you need to destroy them and not rerelease them.
If you're angling in saltwater as long as you adhere to size and bag limits I think you'll be fine wink.gif

Noooo!!!!11 sad.gif

we need as many snapper in the wild as possible to have any hopes of them surviving when this demonic marina comes in, plus they just aren't suited to anything except public aquarium, they're a huge fish.

G'day Kev,

I know I'll get hammered for this but,...... I have always wanted a Redfin(not native I know) Tank. I think they are a cool looking fish, I know they are a pest etc, but still. Caught many and always find it a tough(but necessary) job to destroy the little ones( bigger ones no probs because they taste good smile.gif )
What type of fish a you talking about here, or just a general enquiry?

cheers

Mudjimba my mate! tongue.gif

It was a general enquiry coz a friend and I was talking about fishing on the weekend, and i remembered catching some "flatheads" when I lived in Melbourne.. I caught a juvie that had nice patterns and brought it home to keep. I used a spare tank I had with natural seawater. Managed to keep it alive for 3mths with a "basic setup". biggrin.gif

So im posting this enquiry coz when I get back to my fishing hobby, and catch a really nice fish, i'd like to keep it as a pet (withing the law)...

Thanks for everyones help so far! As always, much appreciated! smile.gif

Cheers!
Kevin

One prob with most of our local species is they don't like warmer temps. Perth's water temp sits around 20deg. Trying to maintain that temp in an indoor aquarium could prove to be a mission.

Sounds cool Kevin, gotta love the flathead. Caught a few big ones over east and down south, one at Augusta was 3 foot long, release the bigger ones as they are the big breeding females apparently. Always thought it strange why they are in The Swan in Perth, all around Freo, in big numbers in Bunbury and Australind but very few ever caught in Mandurah.......over fished? Some of those caught in Perth are great looking fish, great colours.

good luck with the plan.
cheers

Yeah.. flatheads are cool! Especially eating them.. taste great! biggrin.gif

In regards to keeping flathead, i dont have any plans of doing it again....yet. My initial post was regarding local laws on keeping wild-caught fish etc..
But yeah.. i'd definately set up a tank in future just in case i catch nice wild-fish... biggrin.gif

Future tankbuster: Flathead! LOL!!!

Cheers!

its one thing to take something from a tank (ie a fish shop) to a tank, but its its another thing to take something from the wild and coupe it up, isnt that a bit harsh?
not havin a go just my opinion smile.gif

This is the case for a lot of fish especially marine (wild caught and put into tanks).

yeah i realise that, i suppose i just like to think all my fish were born in a tank and are happy in my tank (ignorence is bliss)
ive seen wild caught fish in tanks and when there conditions are matched to the wild theyre happy but if not they just tend to sit in the corner and sulk,
probably couldve worded my opinion differently smile.gif

This link should tell you what you can and cant collect, what size limits and how you can collect them.

Cheers

And if they are not on that list you can collect up to eight per day of any size. Otherwise stick to the bag and size limits.
