I'm sure there are probably people out there that do keep them as pets, but beware that doing this is illegal. All Redfin Perch caught must be destroyed when caught and never returned back to the water live.

I used to have a pet one when i was a kid. Only had him for about 4 months and he managed to get hold of a really large slug that crawled into his outside tank one night. Got stuck in his throat and killed him. Awesome looking fish but very illegal and very agressive.

Are they illegal to keep?

From what I know they are a Class 2 restricted fish in WA. Which means that they cannot be imported into the state without permission.
I think it is only illegal to be in possession of Class 1 species.

hmmmm i offered my services free of charge to calm/rangers at mundaring to rid the weir of redfin perch.... but they never replied back....
many moons ago we used to catch them and eat them..... my mates mum made em taste "yummo"

they are pretty easy to catch on small lures around dusk..... good fighting fish for freshwater.... 2-3kg was a good size fish....

maybe docfish knows the legalities of this species????

They are deffently one of the best fresh weter eating fish, once they are hooked they fight like a wet papper bag. Trout fight a lot harder.

I have seen them well over there 4kg mark in the last 12months.

Sorry to go a little off-topic, but I'm really curious to know what rainbows are found in the area you specified.

Syd.

they are only on Class 2 - Restricted, not Class 1 - Noxious.

Go here if you want more info on the restricted classes

Reading through those links from oli, it looks like they can be kept in an aquarium? Would I be correct in assuming this?

I saw alot of juveniles in the murray river a few weeks ago when i was marron fishing, along with millions of glass shrimp, billions of gambusia.

I also found common jollytails and managed to spot a 5" Nightfish too!

I did not try to catch anything but marron, but found it very interesting what fish are along the shores soon as nightfall comes!

(not to mention the barrage of different spiders, big and small, lots of interesting insects, bugs and creepy crawlies!)
