How Big A Sponge Filter For A Squarish 107l Tank?

30 November 2011 - 06:06 PM

I want to set up a bare bottom square open top tank with some driftwood and plants attached.

Because there aren't many power points I think that air filters will be the best option. I have found that airstones move the water quite well to provide oxygenation, and airlines/airfilters don't hog the power points like canisters/internals.

What size/how many filters would I need please? I want to keep some ember tetras and a couple of bettas (in big frysavers).

How To Make Holes In Plastic Containers

30 November 2011 - 04:05 PM

This is a no brainer for all you brainiacs with the power tools.

I want to make some big frysaver type containers for my bettas, to put in a larger container.

I'm thinking

(a) critter keepers (hard plastic)

(b ) food grade plastic containers (soft plastic)

Do I go with the drill for the hard plastic? Wouldn't it split the plastic?

Do I go with red hot wire for the soft plastic?

Thanks :-)

Anyone In Perth Kept Green Neon Tetra?

14 November 2011 - 03:53 PM

I love the look of the green neon tetras but would like to know whether anyone in Perth (Gnangara Mound catchement) has kept them without changing the water parameters.

This website http://www.tropicalf...een-neon-tetra/ says the species is solely wild caught and to be kept healthy needs a pH of <6 and a dGH of 4. I don't know what my dGH is, my pH is a stable 7.8.

thanks in advance.

Finding Seepage/leak - Dye Test Water?

06 October 2011 - 05:36 PM

My AquaOne 320 http://www.aquaone.c..._lowres_new.pdf appeared to be seeping water from the base last night. I immediately unplugged and emptied it. There is no damage that is obvious to the eye, so I thought I would refill it and add dye to the water to help find the seepage spot.

I have some potassium permanganate, and also some food dye (for gravy).

I thought I'd start with the pp.

Thoughts?

I'm going bushwalking today in the Old York Rd Area. I'll do a bit of stream dipping. Wonder what I might find?
