Size of tank (length / depth) / number, size and wattage of lights?

The replacements will be regular T5's or HO's ("high output")?

Maybe go to a Sponsor and have a look at what they have - compare between T8, T5 and LED.

Then figure out what lights you want and how much you have to spend... could be better off saving up for LED's?

I think to bring out the brightness you want to triple that single t8.

I am pretty sure you can get a triple light, light-hood (90cm long) and then fill it up with a couple of T5's and a T8.

But be aware if you triple your light, you will upset your algae/plant equilibrium and may get big outbreaks of algae. This may take up to 6 months to sort out.

Also finally, if the fish are hiding all the time, it may be because the light is too bright.
