Just lost my whole colony of 8 to an Eheim Jaeger heater malfunction! :(

A warning to those out there who have been using the same Jaeger for an extended period of time Throw It AWAY!

A new Jaeger heater would have set me back $300.

I now have lost 10 times that amount.

Hope someone else in WA is breeding these awesome fish.

I'm going to go and cry some more.

RIP

Thanks mate nah it was definitely the heater my other tanks are fine. Temp was 38 degrees when I checked on it tonight.

They were fine this morning so the heater must have overheated the tank this afternoon. Summer hasn't been an issue for the last 8 years.

Annoying thing is I was gonna buy a new heater last year cos I noticed some condensation on the inside of the glass and the heater light had stopped working.

The Jaeger had to be at least 6-8 years old.

Man I loved those fish.

nah what i mean is if there not in the aircon inside ya house then a heater isnt a good idea in summer... someone said a few weeks ago on here that heaters should be left on during summer as they regulate the temp but thats so wrong... i left a heater on in one of my tanks for a few weeks coming up till christmas... and that tank just kept getting hotter and hotter everyday as it never had any relief at night cause the heater just kept stop it from cooling down at all during the night :/...

but ofcourse heaters do screw up but having a heater on in summer isn't the best idea imo... (unless of course there in a room with air con running)

I agree but shouldn't the heater stop working if the temperature of the water is above the set temperature on the heater? I have left it on for at least 6 summers with no dramas.

yeah but im finding more and more that if the heater is there and ofcourse has its set temp the tank doesnt cool down past that heater temp... if i was gonna have a heater on during summer i would only set it for like 24 to avoid my tank ever getting any lower then if we just so happened to have a cold day... on hot days that bit of relief can be the thing that saves ya fish...

do you think if it was winter and that heater stuffed up your fish might have pulled through....?

i have found that to be a problem with jager heaters... when they malfunction they stay switched on.... my experience with aqua-one heaters is when they malfunction they stay off... in my opinion giving fish better chance of being cold rather than being cooked....

fish - has always stood for F@#$ it shiit happens... and it will always happen...

sorry for the loss and im sure theres a few breeders around that can sort you out with some juvis to start again... if and when your ready to take the plunge again....

Sorry to hear. In summer I turn heaters off just in case and I have battery back up airpump to keep things ticking along if the power goes out.
I actually did a risk assessment a few months ago on my fishy stuff (mostly so I can worry less about the kids drowning or getting shocked) but it was a worthwhile exercise because it got me thinking, what can I do to stop potential issues happening rather than just saying to my self nah that almost never happens and then freaking out when something does go wrong.
I went and spent a few hundred dollars on new equipment just to address some of the "what if" scenarios.
Again sorry to hear about your loss mate it always sucks.a

 risk assessment on a fish tank I would love to see that and give it to safety on site they would think all their birthdays have come at once lol

Did you do a take 5 immediately before commencing said task?

Not on a fish tank exactly but on the whole setup thats lots of power leads, power boards and over 4000ltrs of water and I have 4 kids aged 3.
Dont want them getting into the formalin before breakfast or grabbing old glass lids etc.

You are a wise man M'man85. More of this kind of thinking would save the world a lot of grief - not just fish keepers!

Sorry about your loss MrKk.

One of my mates is into marines he said he has made extra thermostats on the power supply so that if the temp exceeds or drops out of range it cuts the power to the chiller or heater. He is gonna make me one. I'll find out more info and do a DIY for everyone.

In the meantime Saturday is looking good for a trip to Aquotix. I've always dreamed of owning a Dovii! The big old Africans don't seem to have as much enthusiasm as their american relatives.

I had the exact same thing happen to my frontosa colony about 12 years back so I know how you feel, stomach drops when you come in to look at your lil matey's and they're lifeless.
