I decided to try to make some glass scrapers.

These are just made of 18mm pine & can be made to any length.

I shaped the handles on the bandsaw. & cut the slots by hand using a fine blade in a coping saw.

I found it very tedious using just a single razor blade as it takes ages to clean a 6ft tank using such a small blade.

The double bladed one is not as good as I expected as both blades need to be lined up exactly for it to work properly.

Anyone got an idea for a longer blade ?

Any feedback welcome.

Thanks for the suggestion Gavin.

I was thinking of something about 60mm or longer.

How about one of the Mrs kitchen knives chopped into 60mm lengths(also stops her coming at you with it when she finds out:0).
Failing that this mob sells a very popular magnet cleaner that has replacement blades.

You can buy scrapers and scraper blades from Bunnings(in the power tools section at Rockingham), they are about 12cm wide, I have the blades here but not the scraper. They only have a short plastic handle, but you can modify and extend it yourself.

I meant OLFA not Alfa
the knife refill blades are 100mm but i think they come in two sizes
if you cant find spokeshave blades try electric plane blades (approx 80mm) they got holes for screws as well

i know there is a long blade available from bunnings that would suit this... give me til tomorrow night and ill get all the details for you, name cost etc. i know we also got in a new line of paint scrapers for this catalogue that are about 100mm long, and replaceable. Uni-Pro im pretty sure the brand is.

also with the Olfa snap blades, they are a bit expensive smile.gif, go with craftech. cheap and nasty. but will do the job. Most of these you should find in the paint or tools department

I found some OLFA blades the other day, they are 72mm long & work great.

These were from Bunnings at Mandurah & was all they had, but I didn't expect any more from them, I will wait until I go to Rockingham or Perth suburbs and get a better range & decent service.

Warning...be very careful when inserting the blades into the handle, I suggest using pliers.

google image search gave me this just search "snap off razor blade"

they are usually available from most stores in some form or another (coles, news agency, craft stores, bunnings) each segment is around 8-10mm in length giving you close to 100mm allow for the large end, and if they are too long you can always snap to your desired length.

Yes Steve, I know that is the usual solution, I have a breeding pair in there, but I also have too many bottom feeders in there.

Including 3 x 10cm Pimelodus pictus, 20 x 8 to 10cm Clown Loaches, 2 x 6cm Upside Down catfish & about 10 x adult Cory's.

Cheers
Col
