Hi
Never sucked a pipe in my life . What I did was buy a garden hose stick one end in the garden and the other in the tank, to start the syphon I just stick the hose in front of a power head long enough for the syphon to begin and woalah.
P.S You can use a squeezable bottle to start the syphon process, I use those bbq sause bottles. All you have to do is squeeze the bottle and stick it to the end of the pipe and then inflate the bottle back up and the water will come flowing.
Cheers
