How many males are we talking about ?

I wouldnt think so as they are good at fending off distratction to breed successfully.

males will have full black fins and be very teratorial.
females will have hardly any black on there fins and are most of the time smaller.

Should be fine, only the strongest will breed with a female so it will encourage only the best genes being passed on.

The only way to tell the sex of yellow labs is to pull them out and vent them.

Incorrect, and not a safe and sure way to sex yellow labs. These fish are monomorphic and both males and females can look identicle.

As I have 6 ELs I did just research them and 1 statement was that the males have a vertical eye bar.

Also said;Dominant adult male, the yellow colouration is more intense, has jet-black anal and ventral fins. The black dorsal edged with yellow. As it ages, it can develop a blackish facemask, which continues along the belly. Often male fish can exhibit a brownish patch between the eye and mouth. Best ratio is 1 male to every 3-6 females.

Subdominant males; the black pigment is less pronounced. Adult females are smaller than males of equal age.

May not be always true?, just a newbe myself.

Jeffrey

Just vent sex them, it's not hard and better than guessing...

Catch them out, flip em over and take a look at their 'bits' - There's pics on the net on what to look for, its pretty obvious.

I had 18 that had stopped breeding as juvies grew. Took them all out and vented them, turned out to be 8M 10F
split them into 2 colonies of 2m 5f and put the spare males in a diff tank again.
and had 3 mouthfuls within the week.
Could be coincidence..
