I inherited a couple of fish which I was told are Blue Rams. I've had Blue Rams in the past, and they were a LOT more colourful than these. Can anyone tell me if this fish is a Blue Ram? And if so, is it a poor quality one? It looks very washed out, lacking in colour.

I think these are the bolivian butterfly rams which are not as blue throughout the body as your german blue rams you had in the past.  :)

Do you need to do anything special with the water? I had heard they were finicky to keep?

Not Bolivians. Like you were thinking it's just an Aussie bred strand of washed out ram, it could end up colouring up better. There are still plenty of good ones around tho.
