#359341 Are Snails Useful?

Posted by Hood on 06 February 2017 - 10:30 PM

I have come to hate the things and rue the day I ever kept a planted tank just due to the fact I still find cone snails in my tanks from over a decade ago despite constantly siphoning them out with detritus from bare bottom tanks. It has taken much great work to keep them out of my big main display tank touch wood.
Ramshorns too were a bane to my existence as well. I used to have the gold Apple snails and even they got on my nerves in the end. But at least they didn't effect spawning like cone snails and such did in the past when I had substrate in tanks.

#359318 Paratheraps Zonatas

Katherine from Aquotix was kind enough to hook me up with this pair Paratheraps zonatas. They were testing each other out yesterday and cleaning off some slate. However after some lip locking the female has retreated. But I got a few snaps of the male.

#359290 Persistent Flashing

I find you have to be careful with treating for parasites as it can in some instances damage the good bacteria in the tank. If your sure it's flukes I'd be like to think that would have cleared up after 2 dosings. Sometimes however I do find it works better to mix a small dose of prazi or the like in a glass, then dump in a bunch of food which your fish enjoy, till it starts to gelatinize and leave it to sink into the food for 20mins or so, then feed this to your fish in small bunches over the next hour or so. I find this treats the fish dirrectly into their guts and is sometimes more effective than dosing the whole tank.
Maybe also try raising the tempt to 30 for a week and add some salt to see weather the stress has brought on some early ich or the like.
I'm sure you already knew all this but thought it worth covering the bases anyway. Best of luck with it.

I think the price guide is a great idea. I tried to push this idea about 6 years ago and was shut down. The hybrid debate is separate to this. But actually educating people that good pure fish are of worth I think is something the hobby needs. The pumping fish out then trying to undercut the next guy is exactly what got us into this mess of crap quality and good breeders packing up in the first place. It also contributes to the flood then disappear roller coaster that happens causing us to lose species.
The hybrid debate is separate and definitely down to education in my opinion. Not just that hybrids are bad m'kay ;) but also down to how to correctly identify good pure fish etc.
Good discussion here guys with some good ideas coming forward. Keep it up. :)

Oh I agree it's a problem. But these nubes also seem to have the biggest egos with the most arrogance through the Facebook buy sell groups. I am honestly not sure how we curb this other than trying to initially be nice to everyone and invite them to join the various conclude club's around the nation so as we may try to educate them and address these problems on a larger scale. Unfortunately I do not think these problems are going away anytime soon and I fear it is our responsibility to preserve as many true species we can and circulate them amongst ourselves and through stores. We also need to not try to undercut ourselves either. That is a solid race to the bottom.

#358896 Fry

Ok cheers I think I will just let the fish have fun in the tank and if I know 100% it is not a cross I will try and sell it

You can never guarantee they aren't a cross if they're produced in a community tank like that. You shouldn't be selling fry from a community tank.

Why not just pick one species and have a nice colony?

...Or if you truly want more than one species you could maybe try one mbuna colony with one haplochromide colony and they may work with no interbreeding.

However if you are really intent on breeding fry to sell you really should keep species specific tanks. And as malawiman has stated the fry will get eaten in the parent tank. You will need a second tank at the very least for fry grow out. :)
