4-5cm is standard size to grow out too before sale.
All those fish will need to be housed in separate tanks by the way as they interbreed easily. And their off spring look very similar when young so would need separate grow out too. Hope this helps. :)

I've heard of crumbled boiled egg yolks being used as an early fry food. But not as fish get older.

#358783 Pcs Exhibition/openday?

...in fact back when ###### (<-- ha, the forum that obviously shall not be mentioned, is still a blocked word here even though it no longer exists.) was around we had a bunch of swap meet/exhibition days up here in the north, usually at school auditoriums or community centers. We'd setup small tanks with fry for sale, or those guys with oxy would have them all bagged up.
Sell ornamental wood, catfish caves, new tanks etc. etc. always a huge turnout which was good exposure for the hobby and some bargains were had as well. I still miss those days, they were a lot of fun with a great community vibe.
I also always wondered why we never had cichlid/fish shows here like they do in other countries, where people exhibit their best males or colonies etc. etc. All these ideas could be combined into one big day, which could be massively beneficial to the hobby here.

I think my dithers ate the fry today. No stress. Might just cut back on them a bit now the pair is bonded for their next spawn. Still good effort from the youngens for their first try.

#358641 What Spawned In Your Tank Today???

Posted by Hood on 14 January 2017 - 11:27 PM

I bred them before I took a break from the scene. I kept a few species for enjoyment but didn't condition for breeding anymore. I have just been firing up all my species again since about a month after my son was born. It's been 3 months and only my 6 bars are yet to breed for me now.
But ah yes, in answer to your question I have bred them before, however this will be their first spawns since firing back up. They produced some good fry last time so be good to see how they go this time. They are supposedly f1's as the guy I bought the fry off claimed his were wild caught. But you never know these days. :)

If your trying to be all business you'll get frustrated and lose interest pretty quick when you realise there really isn't any money in it. You gotta do it for the love. :)

#358349 Canister Sucking Air

Posted by Hood on 07 January 2017 - 07:41 AM

Could you just simplify and do away with your canisters? I did so for just these reasons. I only run one display tank about 750 liters with fronts and just run two internal eheim filters. Means A little bit more regular cleaning of those but takes 5mins.
