Hello all, this is my first post on this or any forum, I have recently purchased a Juwel 240L tank that I am setting up as a Cichlids tank, I have been to Pet Magic Bibra Lake once when work took me out that way and I was very impressed. However I live up Joondalup way, the question I have is 'is there a store with a similar quality and range of stock north of the river?'.
I have about 2 more weeks to wait while the tank is cycling before I start stocking it up, I'm prepared to travel south to get the best fish, any tips of where the best place to go north of the river would be.
Thanks in advance.

+1 for Seaview! I really love that store, super friendly people that always offer good advice and tips. Another thing I like about them is that they stock ADA stuff.
are they done with the renovations?

Nice tank.
Do some research on the fish you actually want to keep. Don't just buy what's available in your area or what someone might be trying to move on. You'll have them for some time and IMO get the ones that make you happy and that will get on best with each other and for your tank size.
Do a heap of research on the net and on here.
Then put out feelers for the ones you want to keep. Wtb classifieds, check the gumtree etc.
I found some really good breeders around who are more than happy to help.
Oh and do some more research. Then some more.

Be careful with Gumtree... You never know what problems you will be inheriting.

I live in tapping so right next to you in currambine.
There is a good City Farmers there in Currambine near the shops, Jetts gym and dan Murphys etc.
Also Pet proffesionals on Wanneroo Rd is pretty good.
Both have heaps of stock!
These are my two hangouts for most things. If i do want something really specialised and unique then i head into Seaview in Balcatta.

id be more carefull purchasing livestock from chain stores, make sure you treat the water like its contaminated with aids never adding it to the tank, ive had some bad experiences from certain chain stores with white spot, that being said they are handy for dry goods when your in a pinch
support the sponsors

Hence doing plenty of research and contacting reputable breeders, who supply quite a few stores anyway, and or take someone who knows with you.
But on the flip side I've had problem fish, disease, dead fish and sub standard fish from every place I've been to. Every place. Not all the time and not with every purchase, but even so treat every fish you buy as if its gonna infect your whole tank. Quarantine and treat before adding any fish.

The Currambine city farmers is where I got my tank and supplies, I hit Jason who works there up for plenty of great advice before actually going for the Juwel tank, handy that they are right around the corner from me.
Just when I thought I was ready to start stocking the tank the 2 small loaches that I had in there got Ich, so I now have to wait another 2 weeks while I wait for that to clear up.
Can't wait to go and start looking for the rest of the fish, I will definitely give the places suggested above a visit.
I will post an update when I've got em all.

thats quite a strong broad statement... one suspects your problem with disease , dead fish is more likely accredited to how your keeping your fish and how often you feed / waterchange / maintain filtration...... and simply by adding fish that have whitespot in early stages before you recognise it....
but yes good practice to quarantine any new fish you get for a couple weeks... been caught myself a couple times... you must also recognise that some diseases are carried across generations of fish before they become active and cause a problem in your tank...
over 90% of dead fish in the aquarium hobby are accredited to ammonia exposure....
if you keep your water quality pristine you;ll hardly ever have a problem as the fishes immune system will be healthy and able to fight off most ;pathogens with ease...
back to the issue with "SOME" chain stores - water quality and basic care is lacking hence all the other issues follow...
but if your purchasing fish off good experienced fish keepers whether they are private or commercial your chances of introducing pathoigens are very low....

Each Chain store is run by different people. Dont forget some of the people working in chain stores as the fish guru's are members of this forum and OUR club, these people care as much about the hobby as you and me! Dont be too quick to tar everyone with the same brush.
I do mostly agree with the sentiment on chain stores but they are not all the same!
Also the forum should be promoting stores that do the righty by the hobbyist... I struggle to find the fish I want to keep... They are not really mainstream ornamental fish and sometimes the only place I can get them is chain stores. By helping me they are supporting my hobby. Stores that do the righty deserve to be recognised irrespective of whether or not they are sponsors!
I understand we have to look after sponsors and I always support sponsor stores where I can.
I just reckon the hobby should support and encourage chain stores and their employees to do the right thing the ones that are doing a good job shouldnt be rubbished with the rest of them!
Dont want fish? Why should a store HAVE to buy them back? I decide I dont like my Holden, Holden dont HAVE to buy it back. The dumb arses that release fish do it because they are knob heads not because chains wont take them back.
I used to work in a chain store. Does it mean i cared less about the hobby than anyone else?
Sorry for the rant.
