I'm thinking about doing a DIY CO2 with the yeast method on a spare tank I filled with plants today
Anyone tried it?
Got any tips?

Yep, done it a few times.

No real tricks to it... Maybe measure and write down your recipe so you can get the reaction level you want and keep it right... 2 litre coke bottle, sugar, yeast and water. Set up a smaller coke bottle as a bubble counter and you're doing it.

Good recipe for a 2lt bottle

2 cups sugar
1/4 tablespoon yeast
1/2 tablespoon baking soda
Fill 3/4 with warm water

Spice jars make great bubble counters, the square V8 juice bottles work good for the reactor

One trick I've seen is throw in half a teaspoon of vegemite. apparently it helps the yeast last longer by providing it with a yeast based food

Sorry for the late reply. I will not be going with DIY co2. I'm saving for injected co2. Will be picking up a bottle from Aquotix in the next couple of days. Got an inline reactor, bubble counter, and check valve. Just need to get co2 rated airline (polyurethane?) and a regulator. Getting it all bit by bit.

I have just set up a DIY bottle, having issues getting bubbles into the tank. The second bottle is counting at about 1 per second but the airline into the tank keeps back filling with water to the level of the tank. There is a check valve on the line.

Any tips on sorting this?

Move the unit higher than the level of the tank, maybe put it on top for now and use the minimum amount of airline you can, that should solve your problem
