Ok so this morning I did a water change and left the light on, I just got home to a 29 degrees fish tank and my favourite and also the smallest red eureka is swimming round the top of the tank almost like hes trying to get air or something what should I do!!

Turn the heater off or down. It may be stuck on.  Add an air stone or two.

You can do a change with some cold water to cool it a bit. Just make sure you use dechlorinator.

You could put it in a cooler tank for a bit if you have one

Check the heater in another tank or container against a thermometer and make sure it can still turn off.

If you have some peroxide, you could add a little to the tank, as this will increase the available oxygen in the water

The available oxygen in the tank drops off quite a bit at 29, and it takes some adjustment for the fish.

Hey mate,

I'd recommend checking your water parameters. 29 degrees isn't extremely bad, I've had the temp in my cichlid tanks on hot days reach 33. How big is your tank and what filtration do you have?

Cheers

Goodluck

Nitrate won't be 0 you should always have a nitrate reading in an established tank, check it again and follow the directions to the letter. The water surface should always be rippling and more so the higher the temperature gets.

Having said that, two water changes in a day is most likely gonna leave you with nitrate levels of 3/5 of f*#k all... Still, Sandgroper is right, probably shouldnt be 0. Surprising how often  Nitrates are improperly tested.

If the fish recovered reasonably quickly with the addition of an airstone, I wouldnt panic. If he still looks worse for wear you need to watch your water quality very closely.

IMO, it was likely just the temp ramping up fast, and the fish was not adjusted to less oxygen resulting.

The bottles need to be shaken very very well for 40-60sec or so before use. If you do this you will find you will get a reading. Give it a try and post you findings. Cheers

I assume it was fine as I did a water change before the high temp

Just jumping into the convo even though I have no exp with Red Eurekas but is 8.4ph a bit high or is that normal?

Keep up the good work Shane, I am sure you will get them happy again :)

I haven't kept them either but I'd say it'd be fine if they are like any other peacocks as they are well hardy fish.

Cheers

Edit: Most will do fine in 7.5-8.5 as far as I know.
