Zeolite is also an excellent highly porous material which can be used in canister filters. I am using it as substrate over U/G filters.

can u use zeolite forever too?
cos im currently using that but not sure when to replace it or should i not worry at all?

I believe you can use zeolite forever, the only media in my 20000 ltr pond is 1 ton of zeolite I hope never to clean it. It's been running for 3 years so far.
Expanded clay used in hydroponics is a very good filter medium the only problem is that some brands float, this can get very annoying.

I believe they both need oxygen, and the winner would be that with the biggest surface area for the bacteria to colonize.
