Ok so i decided to bulid my own three tier stand in order to better organise and store my tanks. I thought i would take some pics along the way if anyone is interested. Please let me know if you think of anything i can improve as i go along. Im still not %100 sure about lighting at this stage but am leaning towards LED as they are most compact and would save room at the top of the tank for access.

steel - 50x50x2 galvanised RHS steel. (i know its a bit overkill but it was priced right)
dims - 1.75m high designed to fit 3 x 3x18x18 tanks
welder - arc with 6013 rods

Step 1
cut steel to length

Step 2
Prep using grinder to remove galv at each end.

Step 3.
tack front and back sections

Step 4.
Tack sides

Step 5.
Get it all level and tack together

steel = $100
welding rods = $20 ish

so $120 all up.

will do the final welds in the next couple of days time permitting. May look at powder coating but not sure what the cost of that will be..

When I build stands I normally clean all my welds with a wire brush, then spray some cold galv over the weld, then do 2 coats of either Duragalv Silver or matt black.

I dont think I have any rust on any of them yet, and some are 4 years old now.

Much cheaper than powder coating, and looks ok.

Welded it up today. Used a coat of primer and will paint with silver. ** thanks for the tip werdna.

Also bought some of these to place over the top of the bottom 2 tanks.

There is a lighting place on high rd willetton that does the same thing but there sealed led's.
Think they were $70 for 3m length with transformer plug. they have adhesive strip in the backnof the strips to.
You buy it by the meter.
Cheers.

Went to IKEA on the weekend for LED lights.

I think they are 90cm long and cost $19.95. 3000Kelvin

I'm happy with mine, I recommend checking them out as they have a number of options including colour changing ones.

Good onya. Which site?

Gave the stand a final coat today, after a bit of experimenting went with charcoal hammered finish which looks pretty sweet. Installed switches to the inside of the rhs for the led lighting and ran the wiring inside the rhs tubing. Painted some aluminum plate that i got from the scrap dealer. Im going to use this on the ends to hold the filters. Photos to come...
