Hey guys,
Just a quick question.
I have a breeding tank in my garage, it is 4ft and I have 2, 300W heaters in it atm.
The last couple of mornings I have gone to check the temp and it is sitting at roughly 23*c.... Is that ok?
I have my tank insulated with polystyrene, any other suggestions on what i can do?
Plus I really dont want to hav2 keep running 2 heaters all the time...

Cheers,
Gareth

23 is ok but I wouldn't let it sit like that for too long.
it obviously depends on what fish you keep in there but usually for me the minimum temp is 24. I aim for 26.

Got red empress in there, see the thing is.
I look at that temp at around 6am every morning, so im just thinking how cold is it when the night is at its coldest, like 3-4am?
Reckon it would be colder?

One is on about 30 and the other is on 26... So they are pretty much constantly running..

I would take notice of what they are set at, they rare normally out with regards to the thermostat. They temp you have them at is ok. I have had my tubs at about 21 for some time and fish are all very happy breeding away. That said ideally I would have it higher at 24 to26.

hey mate

ive got a similar prob to you
got a 4 footer and a 3 footer running in my shed

went down to clark rubber last week got some 20mm poly for $3.75 enough to do the sides/back of the 4 footer

the same for the 3 footer as well

i figured with the temp dropping low this week i'll up the heater, got 1 300w in the 4 footer, put it up to 28 checked the temp this morning around 7am was sitting at 26 degrees
maybe the thickness of the poly did the trick who knows?? the fish are swimming fine got some venustus & peacock juvies in there doing fine

oh and my shed is not insulated at all

the poly seems to be keeping the heat i

Got poly round mine too mate.
And running 2 heaters, the tank is right next to the rear roller door so im guessing the cold air gets through the gaps and makes it cold...

Malawis are fine down to 21 degrees.
I let a few of my tanks drop down low this year, I had Euchilus and Moorii tank down to 15 degrees accidentally, they just dont eat much and sulk down the bottom of the tank.
I turned my heater up a bit, now the tank is sitting on 21 and they are really active.
Rostratus I let go down to 18 degrees and they are fine, still schooling together and breeding fine

2 300w heaters in a 4ft is heaps. I had one 300w in my 8x2x2 in the garage for 2 years and it kept the tank on around 21 degrees in winter no probs.

One 300 watt heater is plenty for a 4 footer, having 2 they tend to bounce of one another. Is your shed tin or brick, i have a 6 footer in my shed with only 1 heater but the shed is a brick one and the temp doesn't drop below 24. Some times the settings on the heaters are off, so to get 24 you may have to set it higher. cheers steve

2 x 300 watt heaters are good for 600L might be worth checking the elements

I have the same problem atm with the 5fter divided in to 5 1ft compartments. They all share the same filteration via plumbing but they dont actually free flow in to each other.

I had a 500w heater in the middle compartment but the heating on the outside compartments is not steady. sometimes as low as 22...

Would i be better off ditching the 500w heater and heating the two outside compartments and center compart with 3 x 100w heaters and that should keep the other two inbetween them steady aswell?
