Hi guys!

So I've just found a bunch of longfin bn fry in my breeding tank! First time I've ever bred these guys so I am quite excited. I haven't come unprepared and know some general tips for raising bn fry but just wondering if you guys can give me some of your own tips with regards to water changing, what sort of food they love the most, is it wise to move them into another tank and just any other things you've picked up when breeding bristlenoses :) Not sure of age as they have completely surprised me, but they are roughly 5mm at the moment!

Looking forward to your replies!

Regards,

Cojakk

congratulations.

A tip I learnt as I had them going missing at about the 4cm mark. I now have two different size aquariums for mine.

the 180 litre is for breeding and fry. I find about the 4 - 5 month mark the fry start getting some good size to them about 4cm which is good if you want to on sell them. the problems was I was wondering for months why they were all disappearing when getting that big. I realised that the parents at a certain size must see them as a threat and then started attacking them.

I then got a 100 litre aquarium and put the 3 - 4 cm juvies in there and surely enough they all live fine.

Dependant on how serious you wanna go I guess. I have albino longfins which seem to be worth some $$$ hence the reason why I thought it was a good idea to buy another aquarium.

Although this is purely a hobby for me, unfortunately with a 3 year old, a wife and another baby due in two months money does come into the calculation :-)

lucky for me my male albino longfin kicks the eggs out of the cave everytime...straight into a egg tumblers for a few weeks...then into a fry saver and i power feed them 4 times a day...always have vege wafers in there and feed cucumber and capsicum and newlife grow and also some small tiny pieces of wood in there and they stay in there for about 1month...then they go into a 2.5 foot fry tank and then i drop the feed back to once a day but keep the water changes happening every second day and they are in there til there bodys are 4-5cm and that can be anywhere up to 6 months...but i only every lose a few of them....cucumber and capsicum and vege chips from aquaone.

the biggest reason why you lose the tiny fry is they starve and this is why i use the small tanks first and then move up as they grow.

good luck hope this helps.

Thanks for the tips guys! I will make sure I keep an eye on their size as that what you said about the adults seeing them as a threat seems quite logical. I will also move them to a smaller tank and start feeding them capsicum, never knew they would like that!
