Australian Lungfish make great aquarium fish. Keep in mind that they grow very large 1.5m or so is the max recorded length. They hit around 60cm in no time, but slow down considerably after that. Feed a meaty diet with clean water.

The biggest concern you will have is at feeding time. A couple things to take into consideration. Not sure if you have seen them eat, but they suck in large amount of water with their food, and can often suck fins of tankmates in. They have incredibly powerful jaws/suction so this can cause great deals of damage. This need to be taken into account when keeping 2 or more lungfish in the same tank, many people have had their lungies rip each others pectoral fins off to the point where they don't grow back. I found this to be true in mine when they were young, although I was lucky enough to notice what was going on in time, and save my fishes fins. They aren't the fastest feeders, so be mindful of that when selecting tankmates.

Heater guards are a must. Have seen some pretty horrible burns on lungies, in particularly Australian lungfish.

You will need excellent filttration. This again comes back to their feeding method which is odd to say the least. They will suck in food and crush it into a thin pancake, and spit it out and suck it in a few times, sometimes many! very interesting to watch. But as you can imagine, it created a lot of extra mess.

some pics of mine. One i sold a while back, the other is at a friends place while i have most of my tanks shut down -

ruffaz - I know we got off on the wrong foot, which is a shame as we seem to have quite similar taste in fish. Hope this helps.

According to this site: http://www.nativefis...u/lungfish.html

it is a protected species and you cannot take wild stock. There is one commercial breeder:

QUOTE
Only one licenced commercial breeder produces this fish for sale (see www.lungfishbreeders.com). All commercially produced fish are micro-chipped and CITES registered, fish may not be taken from the wild. Due to high costs and legal requirement involved in breeding these fish, lungfish are not cheap to purchase, so they are really only suitable for the committed enthusiast. In addition, you may require a licence to hold this species, depending upon local laws.

Mine are chipped with certificate from tge old wildgrove facility. Was sold a while back, last I heard the new owners aren't having too much luck. Pretty sure they only need to be chipped if u live in qld.

If your going to get them, make sure you get a nice wide tank. They aren't the best turners due to the configuration of their scales (interlocking).
