For all the pond owners, what sort of heaters do you use for them if you do use them? I want to get some recommendations.

Depending on the volume and where the pond is situated you have a few options:

  • For smaller ponds; Use large aquarium heaters, a few JAGER 300w with efficient coils are a good start.
  • For larger ponds you can use a spa heater with a thermostat or custom made, large gauge winding/coils wired to a thermostat.
  • For even bigger applications of several thousand liters 20,000L+ A gas heater is the most economical option.

Heating a outdoor pond is expensive, You can reduce your energy consumption via insulation around and on the bottom of the pond. I would also recommend covering the pond during cold nights with a material like corflute to keep the heat in.

Ps: Solar heating may also be an option but will require some custom fabrication and instrumentation with a thermostat and, to my knowledge is not available for a pond in a commercial kit.

Careful with some high wattage heaters, many of them actually heat less water than the 300 jager ( usually only 1 litre per watt, so 600w only 600 litres where a 300 jager does 600-1000 litres). Check performance first or sit down before you open your synergy bill.
As mentioned pond heating expensive, so much heat loss through large surface area due to evaporation. Insulation of the top is advised, have seen old coolrooms converted to pond covers for cold weather, this reduces heat loss. Many horticulture outlets sell 'greenhouse' tents which can also reduce heatloss.

I have looked at solar heaters where water is pumped to tubes exposed to sunlight. Works but not everyday.

There is no mention of it being specific to pond heating.

Sorry, what was I thinking?

Oh yeah, I remember now... so what? Why would it specifically mention its application to a pond? It heats water, ponds typically contain water... Stay with me here... I reckon with these facts in mind, a reasonable person, may in fact (Barring any previously unmentioned restrictions or performance requirements), be able to heat a pond with this device.

I will look into spa heaters. Thanks for the helpful info.

I have used 2 jager 300w heaters in my 500l pond for over a year now. Got all my cichlids in it. I just put a insulation bubble cover on the top at night during the winter months.
