Hi, just wondering if you could make your own pond using bricks and then a cemented layer over the top the same as pools are made? Would the cement be harmful to the fish? If your wondering it would be filtered by large DIY system.

you would have to seal the pond imo if you were going to go ahead with this idea iv seen it done just make sure its well sealed and make sure the sides are extremely sturdy

well this wouldnt be done for a few years but yes my idea is pretty much for a small scale pool (minus the lining) with native plants and trees and mangroves etc. What would i seal it with?
Would this erode with brackish water?

Thanks Elliott

Hi Elliot,

Its not a hard thing to do. If you want to build a pond. These are the steps involved:

1) you got to dig a hole that
2) you need to stamp the sand to the area hard
3) you then put the concrete in- must make sure you leave a gap in the concrete if you are going to make a bottom drainage.
4) then when the concrete is dried up you need to sand it down to remove any sharp edges
5) You then apply a fiberglass-resin coating over the top
6) let this dry
7) Then you need to sand this fiberglass coat down to remove all the sharp edges
8) You then apply a black or blue waterproof pond resin-paint on top.
9) Let it dry

Yes cement will harm the fish.

I would not use brick at all just make sure you stamp the sand so that it is pack together and Hard.

Just use fibreglass, water-proof paint.

Hope this helps

Depending on the size of the pool.... a mate of mine can get it for me . From memory the fibreglass cost around 450 dollars and the resin is like 200 dollars for a whole tub.

If you want to get to know this guy or ask for any further professional help then pm me and i will give you my mate's phone number.

He is in the koi society of WA and he builds pond for a living!

Hope this helps

MM
