Barca888,
I paid $290 for my 2217, I think you still can get it for around the same price if not cheaper. Fluval 404 I don't think is that much cheaper. I have one and is not working properly I am not sure why, maybe the motor or impeller.
Eheim never give me problem and I still have the first 2213 over 12 years old that is still working like new.
I think you would be better off getting a second hand Eheim if you can't afford the new one.
Good luck.

If you can wait and save you money to pay for an eheim go for it, I won't settle for anything less even though the price is so high, I once left mine for over a year without cleaning out and since then I have and it still works fine, and the best part is the fish I neglected still lived even though I never did any filter maintanence for so long.
I'd have mine for over 5 years now and never had any problems, also it runs extremely quietly. I've never tried any other brands but eheim has never let me down so I'll stay with them (hopefull the filters that cost half the price don't run better cause I'll never know...)

Yes i recently purchased my first eheim product and i have to say the thing is extremely quiet (internal filter). I know the quality of eheim and know if i purchase an external cannister filter from them, ill be getting the good stuff. However i am currently purchasing a new 5fter and money is a big problem. I am gonna dish out the extra cash for a new filter for my 6fter (ugly inbuilt internal box filter).
I am getting the resun ae808 filter by resun for my 5fter, hopefully it will do the job ;\
