Great stuff Az!
I am really keen on trying to breed these catfish. From the first time I saw the "Jewels of the rift" on youtube, I have been absolutely amazed!
Would love if you could give me some tips!
My current specifications of my tank are 4Lx14Wx18H
Stoklist:
5 x M. Interruptus (1M4F) (breeding size)
2 x Kadango Borleyi (1M1F) (breeding size)
5 x Crimson Tide (3M2F) (juveniles))
4 x Sulphur Crest (1M4F) (juveniles)
I currently have 3 Syno Multi (Although, I haven't seen 1 in ages).
The two that I see most often look very similar in build, and from having a look on the net, both might be males due to the size of their petrical fin. But I have nothing to compare to, so might be wrong.
Question:
From my current stocklist do you think that there are some potential in breeding these?
One thing though is that I need to get more Syno Multis, But how many more?
Is there a ratio that works best for these catfish?
Sorry, didn't mean to highjack thread, would just like to know more and find what worked for others.
Cheers

Answer:
Yes for sure.
I think the (5 x M. Interruptus (1M4F) (breeding size) ) would be the best chance due to them being a good breeding fish.
I use to use Pseudotropheus or Metriaclima species. They breed like rabbits and the males are so caught up in chasing other fish away they dont see the Multi's sneaking in.
And on the plus side the females have big mouths so they can hold a lot more Syno fry.
Well its hard to say. I think I built my colony to 15-16 fish.
The ratio was around 2F to 1M. I had more females so I could breed them more regularly. Once they started they didnt stop.
I housed them in an IBC with maybe 20-30 Pseudo's and was pulling catfish fry every 2-3 weeks. They grow SUPER fast and on the plus side when the females did escape me catching and stripping the catfish once spat wouldnt get nailed by the fish.
Didnt hijack at all. The more questions the better
Hope I was able to help.

Full grown....
Around 1M 2F and the fish that you intend on spawning it with.
If you want to breed them, IMO get a bigger tank. They love plenty of floor space. Go wider not higher

Hi Guys,
Great news! I now have 2M and 3F!
All this time I had 3 Females. So I manage to get a hold of 2 males from a fellow PCS member.
So far they are all fine together, there is enough Holy rock for everyone to hide
Now onto my questions
Should I be "preparing" my females somehow? I read a lot of people separate the females in another tank and feeding them bloodworms/earthworms/etc to fatten them up.
My issues is I only really have the one tank and taking the females out ever so often will become a mission, especially with all the rocks!
Also I don't really want to feed bloodworms in their current tank as I am afraid of bloat for the cichlids.
Any suggestions? Or should I just leave them as is for now?
Thanks,

If you want to feed the multi's high protein, feed them late at night. The multi's will still be on the prowl and the cichlids if the room is dark should be out for the night.
