Hi guys might be asking a silly question but the past week or so ive noticed a few cichlids doing a few odd things.

1. Partnering up and chasing eachothers tails n smallish circles.

2. What appears to be having tail spasms (stopping dead to shake franticly what her momma gave her)

There has only been 3-4 that I have seen doing this but it has caught my attention.

All fish dont seem to be showing any signs of distress or illness, waters testing all good with weekly 25% changes.

Its most likely a natural thing but curious to know what the behaviour usually means.

What fish and size tank?

Possibly breeders pairing up. Dominance thing, males fighting over females to be top dog.

I've seen my dads tropheus doing this lately.

6x2x2 tank

Metriaclima pulpican
Pseudotropheus demasoni
2 electric yellows (labidochromis caeruleus )

Theres about 20 fish in the tank so far with plenty of caves to keep everyone from getting territorial

the chasing is part of the mating...males do that.

the chasing each others tails are two males starting to fight for the top job.

the shaking  after darting around is a mating dance.

my personal opinion...you don't want the fish breeding unless you know for sure the female holding a mouthful has mated with her own species...if you cant be certain then what happens in a community tank stays in a community.

happy fish keeping.

Thanks for that guys. Ill have to keep an eye out.
The yellows sound like they are pairing up and the other two are just having a tiff.

Haha what happens in a community tank stays in a community.
