I went everywhere trying to find pool filter sand and it was a no-go, so playsand will have to do.

Playsand is ideal for Geo's
Close up of Playsand
Play sand mixed with natural gravel... Not for everyone but I like it.
River sand is nice with a more natural colour that has an inconsistent grain size. Play sand will give a snow white, very consistent fine grain look. Neither is really better, just depends what look you are going for. As shown above some species prefer sifting through the finer play sand substrate rather than the courser river sand.
Bought the last lot from Masters, they call it kids sand. I give it a couple of rinses before adding it to the tank but its not essential

Sand is great for catfish whiskers, but not the best for plants. In my current build I created zones for sand and gravel.
