#329803 African Cichlids Substrate

Posted by Bermont on 21 October 2014 - 12:04 PM

if you want to make them pop stick to a white substrate, if you use aragonite it will help to buffer the water and will look good, if you dont need buffering playsand works great, if you wish to go for something closer to their natural environment, lake tang is lots of large black rock and crush seashells and corals, lake malawi is fairly similar just more rocky, but neither lakes really have much sand.

#327209 Tropheus

Posted by Bermont on 15 September 2014 - 10:53 AM

all good advice, moori have a tendancy to be very boisterous and can get aggressive so you have to be careful, but this is why you keep tropheus in large groups, in that tank personally i wouldnt have less then 15-20, lots of flow and keep the tank with some algae in it to encourage them to graze on the algae, algae will primarily be their main source of food as it is in nature, mine will only eat plants when there is no food or algae in the tank. i keep mine grazing if i can, so i do slightly smaller feeds to avoid chances of bloat and always have meds on hand for tropheus :) not really a beginners fish but with some care and attention these fish are one of the best africans you can buy hands down!

#326950 Stock Up Before March 2015!

Posted by Bermont on 12 September 2014 - 11:25 AM

personally i thought this was good, after talking to a few people, prices MAY potentially go up a tiny bit, but it just means they are weeding out all the shit importers that send bad and sick stock, we should see better quality and healthier fish coming in due to coming from a higher quality source, most our fish already come from the already approved sellers anyway...

you want to get a minimum of 15-20 for a colony or you risk too much fighting and injury

arent you meant to let ADA cycle for 4 weeks due to its high ammonia content, the tank needs to cycle again, you really shouldnt have fish in there yet

#322228 Who Here Keeps Tropheus???

Posted by Bermont on 26 July 2014 - 05:42 PM

ive got about 4 diff species right now, SP black bulu points, Sp red moliro, duboisi and Red rainbow kasangas, and just bought 23 red bembas.

Just a note, there is 2 schools for keeping tropheus, many people like huge tanks for them, but a lot of us use a Method that Paul from morley has been using for well over 15 years. there will be a lot of people saying its not good and cruel etc but i keep 10-12 adults per 100L of water, this usually means that a single male will control the colony and aggression is evenly spread out, ive also found a minimum colony size of around 15 is preferred once adult size due to aggressions.  All my tropheus are healthy and happy ive got fry coming from all my colonies too.

#321575 Good Led Light For My 4Ft Tank?

Posted by Bermont on 17 July 2014 - 11:55 AM

basically, if you want really budget, go for LED spotlights, 2x 20 or 30 watt would be HEAPS, if you have no plants get one of the beamworks or the new aqua one tropiglo LED, both very cheap, about the 150ish mark, if you have plants i recommend the new aqua one plantglo, im getting AMAZING results with it, just as good as a fluval unit growth wise and MUCH cheaper, and then of course fluval LED units for plants aswell but towards the high end of your price range, malaga city barn has the best pricing for the aqua one units right now, but if they dont have any in stock Avid Aquaria has them., LED floodlights are best purchased on ebay.
