#342306 Possible Vallis Shortage!!

Posted by jjm66smokey on 26 July 2015 - 05:07 PM

Came home after a great 5 days holiday down south to find...the bottom had cracked and fallen out of my 4ft vallis tank... fortunately it was out the back near the clothesline... has taught me some valuable lessons...
1. Never rely on a second hand tank (at least not indoors)
2. A steel stand is not always adequate support - especially with only 1 metal cross-brace
3. Never overload with substrate, even if you are running a Vallis factory
4. Distribute the load evenly with a solid board on top of the stand frame with insulating foam above

... now to hit gumtree for the cheapest 4x 18 I can find!!!

Aren't they a prohibited species just like Gambusia?

From the 'net:

"The speckled mosquitofish (Phalloceros caudimaculatus) was one of the earliest livebearers in our hobby. It was described in 1868 as Girardinus caudimaculatus by Hensel. Later the name was changed to Phalloceros caudimaculatus by Eigenmann in 1907. It was originally described from southeastern Brazil and its range is in eastern Brazil from the Rio de Janeiro along the coast down to Uruguay and Rio de La Plata.  It is also present in Paraguay. The male reaches a length of approximately 3 cm (1 inch) and the female can grow up to 6 cm (2¼ inches)."

www.fish.wa.gov.au note the One-spot livebearer or speckled livebearer (Phalloceros caudimaculatus) as being an introduced freshwater pest species.

"If you see any introduced species in the wild or catch them, don't return them to the water - dispose of them humanely and report them to us, you can help us understand pest distribution and develop effective control methods."

However, if you look at the Fish Resources Management Regulations 1995 on www.slp.wa.gov.au, you'll see that unlike the members of genus Gambusia, the speckled mosquitofish (Phalloceros caudimaculatus) isn't prescribed as a noxious fish.

Suggesting you can catch/keep/breed (but not release) them... so ..... how many would you like Mattia, and will you please swap me some plants in exchange?

Of course I supported my LFS, Seaview's where I always went to buy aquarium soils, chemicals, my Fluval canister and parts, all sorts of useful spare bits and pieces!!

It's all those other "North of the River scum" you need to target, Jason.

I'll give you the link to all their addresses and phone numbers and you can contact them all individually either by writing or calling them, and let them know...

It's not THAT bad north... Rob's Aquariums in Malaga (plus City Barn), Morley Aquariums, Aquarium Gallery in Wangara, and further east to Midland Aquariums, ... plus the usual various non-sponsor stores.  :)

Mind you, it's worth a visit to Veba's just to see that beaut huge marine display, keeps me entertained for ages!  :D

Yep, she has a history on Gumtree of advertising (but hopefully not selling) things at AMAZING prices... like frogbit at $1 per piece as I remember... and fish at far higher prices than LFS's.

(and I believe she's also on this forum but don't recall having seen her advertise here)

#338256 Your Quick Response To This

The Death Penalty is a final solution that solves nothing.

It causes ongoing damage and suffering to the families far longer than the public's recall of the "deterrent effect" of such "justice".

In the case of Chan and Sukuruman ....

Will it stop the flow of drugs through Indonesia?

Will it stop the flow of drugs into Australia?

Would it have been imposed if the original trial judge had been paid off?

Has it consistently been imposed in Indonesia for similar crimes?

Would they have been charged if they'd paid off the local police (or police chief) at the time?

Is it fair and reasonable to impose such a penalty after they spent 10 years on death row?

Is it fair and reasonable to impose such a penalty when they demonstrated rehabilitation?

Is it fair and reasonable to impose such a penalty when they were providing such leadership and charitable services to others?

In general terms...

Is the verdict reached by a Court always the correct one?

Do trial witnesses, including police, always tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth?

Has everyone that has been executed (in Australia, in Indonesia, and elsewhere), been guility of the offence?

... Too many miscarriages of justice over the years

... Too many successful appeals where convictions are overturned

The Death Penalty is not a deterrent, it is not an appropriate punishment, in any supposedly democratic country in an enlightened 21st century!!!
