I was told pool filter sand would work well in aquariums because it's cheap, in treated and would already be washed so it wouldn't make the tank cloudy.

This is the only stuff I could find at bunnings Attached File  ImageUploadedByTapatalk1446867807.028449.jpg   213.23KB   13 downloads

Play sand in garden section $7.00 per bag. A 2 minute rinse in a bucket and you're in business.

Yes a bit of homework and we have to visit our cousins so might swing by if we have time!

Any recommendations for the sand?

Pool filter sand is fine go for it, but it will be a little cloudy still. I would rinse it prior to dumping in the tank (same as anything I put in a fish tank). So, I reccomend getting the $7.00 sand and using the same amount of time washing it at a fraction of the price. If you dont wanna wash it get the filter sand dump it in your tank right out of the bag and see what happens.

You cant spare 1-2mins to wash sand before putting in an aquarium?? No offense but you should reconsider having an aquarium.

Golden rule.. wash everything you put in your aquarium.

Some offence taken, but I understand we wash everything we put in the tank! Do I just stick a hose in a bucket of sand and let it overflow, will that clean out the small particles?

Thanks for all the help guys!

Storm I am only 14 I'm probably not the best person to be keeping fish it's just were in a bit of a rush to finish the tank cuz the fish get here on Tuesday!

I can sort out the filters with some media from my other two tanks!

Lex,

Stating that you dont have 2 minutes to rinse sand appears absurd and that is reflected in the responses above.
To wash sand stick half a bag at a time in a bucket, put hose in, swirl it around with your hands for 10 - 20 seconds, tip the cloudy water out as best you can without tipping sand out and repeat twice more or until you are happy.

Just got some, washed it and put it in the tank... Also spent $200 on some rocks... Aquarium gallery were the only ones who had it! Looks pretty close to the picture I based it off 131bb9d64a34a43e6c1ca55631da5091.jpg
