Hi.
Really need to vent right now.
Bought some of the square in tank nets with plastic frames today.
Thought I was doing the right thing, give them some more space and cleaner environment.
Check on them tonight. Six dead jalo fry!! Jammed between the net and the frame.
Absolutely f'ing furious.
As if they're not hard enough to come by and to breed quality fry, to find that is heartbreaking.
Avoid these nets for smaller fry.
States on the box and sold to me to separate new fry, holding mothers and sick fish etc.
I could just about loose my shit right now.
FYI the fry were a month old and doing fine.
I shoulda just left well enough alone.
Sorry for the vent.
Matt

i dunno if they died from getting stuck... ive had fry die and get stuck in spots because the air stone was pushing them around and they get caught on there after they were already dead... ive used that same net before though and it never happened to me when i used that only with these hard plastic ones they were getting stuck in the slits in it... but as i said it was because one dead the airstones can push them around alot more and they eventually get stuck somewhere depending on where the water flow is going ?

I too have had fry die in these fry savers, iv found some still alive trapped between the net and frame. I'd suggest just making your own fry savers, so much better

I cut a bit of plastic from a display folder & place this tightly in the base frame of the net fry savers. This stops them getting jammed or sucked on by fish from underneath. Very effective.

small little glass fry tanks are the way to go...three or four of them at hand...just have a seeded filter in another tank ticking over and when you need them fill them up.

mine go from the egg tumbler then straight into there own tank...less casulties and grow faster.

The fry savers I make up work wonders, I started making for because of those fry savers as I've had the same problem a couple of times.

I will have some more up for grabs soon.

I've also found that fish in the tank (not in the breeder net) seem to get stuck between the glass and the outside of the breeder net

These are good breeder boxes:

These also look pretty good :

The external ones are great, circulate water from your big tank

Yup the fry/fish in the box can't get trapped, and the fish in the tank can't get trapped against the outside of it and the glass

There's also the "MetaCube" brand of boxes that seem pretty good. At the moment I just use a generic clear acrylic fry saver that floats in the tank, found them to be pretty good but I always have an air filter pushing some fresh water in or they can get a bit of a film building up on the surface of the water inside the fry saver

The metacubes can also be used as a filter which I found interesting.

Hi.
Thanks for the replies guys.
Have removed the nets and put them back into their ice cream containers.
A very frustrating experience.
Just thought I was doing the right thing and more flow and room etc. I thought wrong.
I have various other fry holders.
IMO these are one to avoid. Lesson learned, the hard way.
Cheers
Matt

Those nets are good for larger/older fry that are more free swimming - or for separating wounded fish for a short time.... We have all come across this happening (even me) and we all learn what works best - good thing about forums like this is others get to hear about these little issues so they can learn from the mistakes/mishaps of others.
Good luck with more of those Jalo

I use these net fry savers with out issue, as with most aquarium equipment you need to tweak it to suit your needs. Like Paul, i put a solid bottom in them, i silicone a ice cream lid on the bottom. You can also put a pool filter sock over the frame as i do when the net has worn out.

Like the idea of the second ones also, just ordered a few.

I like the idea of freeing up the tank space and also the movement of water.

I'll let you know how I go with them.

Thanks for the link.

Matt.
