At the recent auction someone mentioned to me that American Flagfish can eat green string algae. Doing some reading up on them, it looks like they prefer slightly cooler water than what I have in my tanks. Has anyone on here got experience with keeping them? Pretty sure Ive seen these for sale not that long ago, and would like to know if I need to get more than 1 for a tank or if theyre happy in their own, and if they would be ok in 26 degrees water temperature.

Thanks

I have a bunch of them happily living and breeding in a small (100l max) water bowl in my garden and they survive all year round from freezing winter nights to the bloody thing almost drying out in summer and the remaining puddle being like a lukewarm bath, also my dog using it as a constant water source. They are bloody tough as nails and you will struggle to kill them. Did try putting some pygmy perch in with the pygmys once and I found them all dead the following days with no fins, they may not play well with tank mates smaller than them or maybe they just have something against pygmy perch...

Can confirm they will absolutely eat string algae.

They will go after most algaes, I had success with what I believe was Cladophora. They dont play nice at all though. Seemed to reach an agreement with paradise fish, but anything less grumpy may be in for a shock.
