You don't really need either to breed apistos. You can lower PH other ways without making the water look like tea.

There are a few soils that will lower PH and keep the water clear.

I couldn't comment on that as I haven't tried it.

I was referring to the soils like ADA Amano Amzaon soil, Fluval stratum, etc.

How big is the tank? ADA isn't all that cheap, cost me almost $70 to do a 2ft tank.

Considering how long it works and how long it lasts, it's not that expensive if you consider how much it would cost to constantly use additives to achieve the same parameters.

It'll stain the water.  If you don't mind that and don't mind having to top it up every week, then go for it.

With IAL you can easily water change short of gravel vaccing,
It's easy to replace, from what I can tell it only teas your water up if you're using a few at a time.

I mainly suggest IAL because you're going to be breeding aspistos, from experience gravel and fry don't go hand in hand.

You'll have to play around with it until you get the parameters you want.

IAL will do the same but decomposes in the water and can get messy.

I can understand doing it if you need to. But why use it for no reason? Its just an extra cost, more maintenance and looks pretty ordinary.

Check out cal aqua lab's "Black earth premium" pretty good alternative to benibachi soil and a bit cheaper too. I'd vote (and have chosen) ial over blackwater extracts as the leaves offer a source of food for bacteria and invertebrates, I also often see my bristlenose rasping on them. Also barley straw pellets can be used to buffer pH to a certain extent.
