Came home after a great 5 days holiday down south to find...the bottom had cracked and fallen out of my 4ft vallis tank... fortunately it was out the back near the clothesline... has taught me some valuable lessons...
1. Never rely on a second hand tank (at least not indoors)
2. A steel stand is not always adequate support - especially with only 1 metal cross-brace
3. Never overload with substrate, even if you are running a Vallis factory
4. Distribute the load evenly with a solid board on top of the stand frame with insulating foam above

... now to hit gumtree for the cheapest 4x 18 I can find!!!

Ummmm .... dunno if the 5mm thick one on Gumtree will take the weight of all the clay/soil/gravel... have been to Bunnings and bought 9mm marine ply board to go under it tho!!!

Anyone got an ugly 4x18 they don't need?

Should know better Jimmmy boy, you cut corners you will just have to do it again and again and again. Until you do it right, which is cheaper to do so in the first place.

Yes I had foam underneath.. but needed ply as well to help with weight distribution

Form ply not much good for outdoors. It swells and delaminates after it gets wet... it is a bit hardier than other plys not as good as marine ply though.

i disagree with you on that one mate.... ^^^^^ i have some under my rainwater tanks for about 10 years now and yes they get full sun for half the day and they also cop all the rain that comes down on top of them... which is a smallish area as tanks are round and form ply is square....

and my two outdoor tanks also have form ply under them... remembering foam on top of that and tank on top of them.. rarely exposed to water from above... form ply is in the same condition as it was when i put it out there about 10 years ago....

i know marine ply is intended to be used in areas of water... but it rots just the same as other ply... unless you seal it... have had boats since i was knee high to a grass hopper... well dads boat when i was a little rugrat...

i got advised to use form ply from an old guy who has used both materials... and as stubborn as you can be when your a young fella and know everything.... i took the advice and im glad i did now... the strength in form ply is superior too IMO.... after all its used to form concrete pours etc...

Agree with you Johnno,,,,, as I'm a carpenter is my field, marine ply does actually have better weather/water resistant glues that bind the laminations than form ply.
But form ply has the surface impregnation that's waxy like and repels water (black film).
There are two gades of form ply with one being a better quality,,,, the better one usually has grey color weather protective edges while the cheaper is green color edges.
When you cut the ply, it's best to seal the cut edges against the weather to bring it to same standard as the rest of the materials surfaces.

If marine ply had the same protective or good as coating as form ply, then marine ply would better it.
Reason for marine ply being so much more expensive than other plys, is not only its glues and usually select twin faces, but it has a solid cross hatch stitched construction with no ends or little gaps (spaces air pockets inside) making it a proper construction grade with no particular compromised areas.

If any type of ply used outside, go ply then foam then a black plastic sheet a inch larger all the way round,,, this would make a little skirt so to speak to direct water away from edges and possible capillary action of water (gravity defying water travel).

Got my marine ply cut to size.
Will paint and seal it today.
And hopefully find a replacement tank.

Quick question regarding vallis can you trim the leaf short without killing the rest of the leaf I've done some research and many people say you can't you have to cut the entire Leaf to the shoot ?

Cutting is fine... still grows. Cut it on an angle though so the end of the leaf doesnt look squqre and ridiculously unnatural.
