What Should We Try And Breed?

20 November 2014 - 01:27 PM

So my husband and I are itching to get back into Cichlids, and because of these new rules coming in regarding the importation of fish, we are wanting to breed something that will help keep the fish community going strong without having to go through the insanity of importing the fish.  We are open to all suggestions and we are wondering what do you ladies and gents think we should look at breeding?

We currently have an electric blue (Maleri Island) male and we are waiting for the others that we got at the November auction to grow up a bit so we can put them together and see how they go.  We are open to a getting a few more species though.  We will very possibly have them in species only tanks depending on their needs.

I have been watching videos of the Pseudotropheus Saulosi and I really like them as they are very colourful and active and seem to have a lot of character.  Can anyone give me any information on those guys please?  How hard are they to keep and breed, and would people be interested in buying them if I was successful in breeding them?

Thanks in advance for any advice :)

Guppies Are Stupid!!!

12 October 2014 - 12:43 PM

So guppies are a bit stupid sometimes.

Last night I was on my computer when one of my cats walked over to my little bin next the breeding tank and he was checking out a shopping bag that had fallen out of the bin....he suddenly jumped backwards and then my staffy ever so gently nudged the cat out of the way (read flung the cat about two feet) and licked what was on the bag. I jumped up and pulled the dog away worried he was going to eat something bad for him, only to find my turquoise male laying on the bag looking pretty dry....even though he had just been licked by the dog. I grabbed him by the tail and dumped him back in the tank....cursing the whole time. I put him in a floating basket as he was swimming kind of wonky and the other makes were hassling him and hoped for the best. This morning he is swimming around as if nothing happened. Silly fish....lol

He managed to jump out of a gap in the glass that is about 2-3mm. Time for some lace across the top of the tank again me thinks.

Electric Blue Or Not?

Does anyone know if this young man is a sciaenochromis ahli or a fryeri ?  Thanks for any input.

New Member Setting Up Again

04 October 2014 - 11:16 AM

Hi All,

My name is Sasha and I have family members in the society and they put me onto you guys so here I am  :)

My husband is a huge cichlid fan and I discovered them when I met him.  We had numerous tanks at one stage but decided we should downsize and sold or put into storage everything except his original 4 foot curved front tank that a friend had made him.  All we kept in the tank were common bristlenosed catfish and we left them to do their thing and see what happened.  Well.....100's of babies happened!!  I sold a lot of them which was great and was a nice little boost in the finance department just when we needed it.

I was getting bored with a tank that really didn't have much movement in it so I wanted to get some more fish.....hubby got all excited thinking cichlids were coming back in the house, but I put my foot down, and now we have guppies going on. :P   I think his heart was broken but he had years of cichlids so it is my turn for a little while.  I know I know I am an evil woman ;)

I went and purchased some Turquoise Guppies and within 2 weeks I had about 100 babies...oops   So down the back into the shed we went and out came the tanks we had stored down there.  First the one foot aqua one tank as a birthing suite that went on the breakfast bar in the kitchen and then the two footer with stand that has ended up in the loungeroom next to the curved tank and then a few weeks ago our 3 foot tank that had been divided into a 3 section breeding tank made it up to the house and that is sitting on a heavy duty pine coffee table....also in the loungeroom.  Sardines ain't got nothing on us!!

I wanted more than just the turquoise guppies so I started looking around.  Then one day we were told about one of your auctions coming up and I saw some Purple Moscows were being sold.  I googled them as I didn't know what they looked like and they were stunning!  I had a ring around the stores in Perth and no one had them.  So thinking it wasn't going to happen I ended up with some Neon Green Guppies instead.    I have a birthday coming up and a couple of days ago my mother in law and her partner turned up with an early birthday present for me.....my own little colony of Purple Moscows and I am in love.  They were purchased from a society member and they are amazing!  So a big thank you to that person :ThanxSmiley: .  I am sure my family members probably told you that I was getting them as a present.   But once again I now find myself in the position of needing more tanks hehe.  I think this is a common problem once people start getting fish of any sort really.   The guppies are a temporary thing...temporary could be one year or ten......but the aim is to try and fund a nice cichlid tank again with any proceeds from the sale of my guppies offspring.

So whilst I am a bit of a fraud for being on here at the moment with no cichlids in my house...my reasons are legitimate as I will be watching and learning while I am biding my time before cichlids once again enter our lives.

Thanks for letting me become a part of your society and I hope I have something to offer whilst I am learning from you all.
