Hey,

Most of these fish i don't believe we have in Australia especially these two:
Hypancistrus Zebra (L046)
Panaque sp maccus (LDA67

But if you happen by some chance to find out who sells these and you can get them back in the country i know ide be interested aswell.

Cheers Dan.

There is L046 in australia, but who would want to sell them, that is trhe question. Would you sell them if you had them? :b
But if you talk to the right people it can be possible to get one i believe.

We just need someone to breed heaps:mb

Yer all we need to do is for someone to breed heaps you say :lol thats gonna be difficult considering most people can't even afford pairs let alone more than one.

Im sure that the first peppermint bristle nose, or whatever fish to land in Australia would have been highly expensive to own (possibly more $ than L046) because it was very hard to get your hands on one,so price demand was high. But people were able to breed the fish and distribute them around so prices dropped.

Yes, many people cannot afford L046, but many people can. So why cant they get them?

Maybe because people that do have L046 are having difficulty breeding them or not breeding enough to make an impact on the availability.
So i think the main problem is just getting them to breed in the aquarium and if they were easy to breed i would imagine they would be quickly distributed around australia.

So what i believe is we need is to breed them, simple as that. If they were easy to breed, where are all the fry? I find it hard to believe that owners wouldn't raise them. And if owners raised them, i would find it hard to believe they wouldnt want to start selling them while they are in top demand at high prices.

Just personal opinion, so I'm not saying this IS the way it is:p just my belief. so if im wrong someone add input .
:)
thanks

this Panaque is the most common of the genus in the country, and regarded as the easiest to breed. recently, over two dozen sold in Sydney, back in 1999 probably over 200 in lfs and in about 1996, at least that amount....... the point i make is this: is it responsible to state that there are (probably) none here if you don't know.... like L046, those who have them aren't bragging incessantly, but there's plenty out there keen to cast doubts on their existence in the hobby, which can only lead to doubts on the legitimacy of specimens if they are bred and then no-one might get their hands on them. there's certainly plenty of fish species that are being held and hopefully bred which people are all too ready to say "there's none in the country" and certainly we may never see some of them being bred and available, but let's not be pessimistic.

Exactly correct how peeps dont want to say what they have if its rare.

Basically, i dont know what other people would do, but if i bred L046, i would be anxious to sell the young, just because of the amount of money i would get . I know fish aint about making money but could you imagine it :good 8o :eek . I would also feel happy to be able to help spread the fish around.

I also believe if one person can breed them, another person can. So i still have a feeling they are hard to breed because they have been around for a while as i know and they arent yet readily available, yet everybody wants them.

With the panaque maccus, it is a perfect example of a fish that would have been rare at some point, but i get the impression from what you said they are not hard to breed. So once a few breeders got their hands on them they were able to produce fry and distribute.

We need the zebra pleco owners to step in with some info. Then we can see how many people have them:p

What happens if you get caught with fish on the bans list? Perhaps this is why people who have the zebras keep quiet.

At this stage there is two issues.

One there is a list of species that are allowable imports. This came into effect relatively recently. So all fish in Australia are from offspring prior to the ban, legally imported fish or bought in illegally.

The second issue is the list of noxious species. This contains a handfull of species/genus that are consider pests. Examples are tilapia. there is a federal list and the states have added a couple here and there. These are the fish you get fined for having.

Hope that muddies the water.

Adam

I think people keep quiet about what fish they have beacause as soon as someone says "oh i have fish X" about 5000 people hassle them.

L046 have been in the country for over 15 yrs
P.maccus are also out here
as are pretty well all the species listed
It's only a matter of finding someone that wants to sell them

Peppermints retailed for $45 ea @ 6cm in Syd 1988 when they first showed up I suppose it evens up when you compare wages then and now to what "new species" sell for
