G'day

 

I know there are a few fisho's on this site. Was wondering how everyone has been fairing?

 

I recently spent a couple weeks overseas, so haven't had a chance to get the tub out over the last few weeks due to the poor weather. I did go chasing snapper immediately before and after the storm off Mindarie and Hillary's rock walls for no result. Doesn't look like anyone had any luck on the pinks. May have had something to do with most of the wind in the recent storm being a SW rather than a NW. Mindarie and Hillary's are plagued with tiny blowies at the moment. Big set baits were getting smashed within minutes. Which doesn't make braving the cold and wind much fun, but that's fishing!

 

Before I went overseas I spent a couple trips out behind rotto in about 60m of water. No real trophy fish were caught, but a nice feed was had each time with; pink snapper, dhu fish (only undersize), break sea cod, swallow tail, red throat emperor, bald chin groper all hitting the deck as well as the usual 'junk' sgt bakers (good bait) and scorpion fish.

 

There looks like there is a break in the weather tomorrow, so will head out behind rotto again and see what is around. Almanac shows it as a good fishing day. Although I'm not a massive fan of fishing an easterly wind when bottom bashing.

 

 

 

If the weather is no good for getting out wide, I'll hit my old faithful whiting spot. Can't beat a feed of XOS whiting.

 

 

Also spoilt myself recently; bought a Vaan stall VM150 reel and matched it with a Samurai reaction 25-40lb rod. Awesome outfit, looking forward to getting it wet for the first time tomorrow.

Wish I had some news, but I just haven't had time to hit the haunts.
I'm getting itchy again, so weather and time permitting hopefully I can add to this topic
Eventually I'll get my bum into gear to be able to post pics.

Been a few good dhu reports as of late.

 

I am looking forward to getting on the troll again this summer. Going to put a lot more time into a metro mack rather than targeting tuna and kings.

 

Also been some stonker tailor taken of the eaches as of late, fish to 80cm and some reportedly larger.

 

A couple mates of mine have gone to Kalbarri for the weekend, so I need to get some decent fish to hit the deck, so I have something to talk about in the coming week.

Got a few really nice KG's and some smaller snapper (still sized) a few weeks back behind 5 fathom. Only took 20lb gear and ended up getting smashed up by some big sambo's that moved in.

Sea breeze came up, so time to head in with a feed. When you don't get out for a while, you forget how good it is.

Being on the water is magic. I am at my happiest when out on the water catching fish with good mates, enjoying a frothie talking garbage.

Nice sand whiting Alex. Some beauties there. It looks like they have already been scaled, was it done with one of those scaler bags?

Ive gotta get out again soon. My river spot would be firing I reckon.

2nd and 3rd pics the fish have been scaled. I use a big serrated bread knife to scale my fish.

Never tried a bread knife. Looks like it does a good job too.I remember years ago my uncle had a bag that you place the fish in, troll slowly behind the boat on the way into the ramp. When the bag is retrieved all the fish are scaled perfectly.Pretty lazy I know...... Works perfectly for KGs.

I recently went on a trip up to Exmouth and caught:

54kg Sailfish, 269cm (Released)
101cm Spanish mackerel (kept)
87cm mulloway (released)
52cm red throat emperor (kept)
138cm barracuda (released)
15kg yellowfin tuna (kept)

Going up to exmouth next weekend for a couple weeks. For work

But taking up a boat aswell. So hopefully will get to go out on that.

I didn't have any gear over here. So for the past week been ordering stuff online and going to tackle shops.

Ended up with 2 outfits instead of one. Always get carried away.

Will post up some pics if i get anything

Wickkyjr - Getting carried away with fishing gear is always great fun.

 

Headed out behind rottnest on sunday. The weather was against us in a big way early on, even with the sea anchor out it was hard to slow down the drift to a reasonable speed. We kept at it and the weather sorted itself out eventually. Ended up with a dhu a bit above 60cm and a nice KG at 55cm as well as a decent break sea and a couple red throat emps. Threw back a good number of sized break sea and red throats as well as another dhu that just went size plus a few small pinkys and the usual bycatch. Managed 3 different species of scorpion fish too. One that I had never seen before, which was bright red with a blue face, real angry looking mofo.

 

 

Saw a couple hump backs out on the water again. This time they were solitary animals.

Looks like the red throats are becoming a mainstay,,, through winter to.
Interesting if we keep getting them through this summer to.

caught a few blowies near mt henry bridge the other day ,but was good fun for my wife ............

Every time I've fished this spot we have got at least 5 red throat, all size too (30cm min), some up to 45cm. Be good if they are a mainstay as they are great to eat, and freeze well (not that I freeze much). I reckon if we are getting them during winter they will be even thicker in summer. Just need to find some big dhu's now.

Well i did it again. Bought a berkley 6'10 drop shot. 

Joondalup bcf had them at 50% off. A few left, along with a couple of strudwicks. Also a couple of shimano raider baitcasters. $250 down to $120

Now i just need to catch some fish haha

Went out on charters. Caught the sailfish with Josh at onstrike charters. Great boat. Food and gears provided. It was a great day.he also catches marlin and tuna.

where is a good spot to land a couple of nice sized dhufish ?

About 20 mile out on direction bank anywhere between rotto and lancelin.
Plenty other spots to,,, not a shore based thing if that's what your thinking.
