Guppies will survive cold water, it's all about rapid changes, if u have big enough water volume they will adjust, I have read of experiments done over a 12 month period gradually increasing the salinity of water and by the end the guppies were thriving in a marine aquarium, I would suggest it was more of a brackish set up though. In saying that though there are volcanic lakes in New Zealand where they thrive and I mean Thrive!!
I would get some plain adults, breed them then remove the males, then out of the fry pick the dullest looking males and breed them back with the females. Then remove the original females, then brew those fry with the dullest females from original fry batch, repeat this process for 12-18 months and you will have non-fancy strong genes guppies

"Possibly!!!"
Worst case is that you would have spend 18 months working out a theory I have for me!! Lol so it will still be worth it
