Hi all have just started to setup a fair few cichlid tanks and wanted any ideas or experiences on where people have collected there river sand or best places to purchase it cheaply. Are you able to use beach sand if you wash it enough times to remove the salt ect any thoughts or ideas would be muchly appreciated

River sand from soils aint soils or probably any other soil/landscaping joint.

Play sand from Bunnings is 7 bucks a bag, is pure white and very fine. Probably a bit too fine to be honest but it works well enough.

You probably could collect your own... ive done it with natural river gravel for a biotope setup. Considering how cheap river sand is I wouldnt worry about trying to flog it from the beach.

I agree with m-man I have playsand and its
1 to bright and washes the colours out your fish
2 way to fine takes a while to settle and gets in everywhere including canister filters which is not ideal for them
