Sump Questions??

31 May 2013 - 12:14 PM

Hi there,

I am building a 2.4mx1mx1m aquarium at the moment(see DIY section).. Just had a few questions about doing a sump. I havent done a sump before, i have always just had cannisters.. but due to the size(2300Ltrs) of this tank i want to put a sump in it..

So my questions are..

I can get my hands on a 5x2x2 (aprox 440Ltrs) tank or a 4x1x1.5 (aprox 212Ltrs), im sure there isnt such a thing as "overfiltering" but my problem is the larger tank will only leave about 200mm between the top of the sump and the bottom of the tank.. as i havent used a sump before is 200mm enough space, as in do you need to play around with the sump much?. But then i have to make sure i have enough room to accomadate the amount of water in case the power goes out... Which is 24Ltrs per/cm of height..

Also what height do people usually put there overflows at?

The only other way i thought of doing it would be to use 2 tanks and run dual sumps.. but i dont know if that would be more of a pain than its worth ??

Any help would be much appreciated..

New Tank

19 May 2013 - 08:06 PM

So i have a 6x2x2 tank with a 51cm toga in it.. and ive been wanting to upgrade for quite awhile now (since he was like 30cm). When you start looking at tanks in the 8ft size and 2.5-3ft wide they start to get a bit pricey...

So for awhile ive been thinking of just making one myself, and this weekend i started FINALLY!. Ive gone the plywood route. im using 25mm thick plywood, it will be fibreglassed with epoxy and I've gone with two windows to keep the costs down a bit as 1 large peice of glass isnt cheap.

The tank itself is 2.4m x1m x1m (outside measurements), so its quite large indeed..

So here is a few photos to show where im up to, and i will keep updating as i work on it, next stage is to bog the corners and the knots in the plywood then sand/ smooth out edges and router the corners getting ready for the fibreglass, i forgot to add that the dark timber behind the front divider is a solid peice of jarrah to support the front frame

Jardini Eye

15 May 2013 - 08:28 PM

Just got home tonight and noticed my saratoga's eye has like a white mark on it .. im not sure if this is anything sinister or a simple bump.

I did a water change and a clean of his tank on the weekend, and he had a scare and tried to jump out of the tank quick hands avoided him making it out of the tank. So im not sure if maybe he hurt it when that happened..

if i could get some opinions about it that would be great
