Many moons ago I always used airstones. I never really understood why, I just assumed them to be an aquarium standard.. or was it because they where used in undergravel filters?
Who knows! But the fad wore off. The undergravel filter is no longer the filteration of choice for most hobbysists and I found myself giving the airstone the complete cold shoulder.
After having an issue recently with water circulation through out one of my aquariums i purchased a quite powerful air pump and an air curtain for the back wall of the tank... This should move some of that still water around.
I plugged her in and away she went, bloody hell did it move the water... it went from clear to murky and bits of crap everywhere in a matter of second. Something i would have expected from a powerhead installation not an airstone/wall.

I didnt take notice of the tank for the next few days but to my surprise when i did see it... THE WATER WAS CRYSTAL CLEAR!!! The yellowish tinge GONE and the water was just looking impeccible!!!

Upon doing a bit of research and reading and actually understanding the importance of bubbles passing through the water i soon realised WHY this had happened.

So i jumped straight back on to The Age of Aquariums and bought another pump and stone... for ym other tank which is heavily yellowed and suffers from algae issues.
I will keep you posted with the results!
