G'day
Picked up a gorgeous little panther grouper today. Looks electric under the metal halide lighting. Only a little fella at ~12cm. I have him in my reef tank until my 5x2x2 FOWLR tank cycles. Non of my reef tank inhabitans are really in any danger as they are all reasonably sized and am not really keeping any inverts (my wrasses keep the tank fee of any
inverts  ).
What is the temprament and growth rate like on these guys?
Planning on keeping him with triggers/angels/eels etc.

Hey alex
these are brilliant fish mate, mine went from 5cm to 30cm in around 7months and then it took him around another 18 months to hit 55cm.
i kept mine with a breeding pair of 3 ft eppulate cat sharks, one 17cm doge face puffer, 3 ft zebra morey, 20cm red fang trigger, 50cm porcupine puffer, 45cm stars and stripes puffer.
over the years though he has also been in with moon wrasse, volitans, blue spot rays, harliquinn tuskfish, pair of wobbys, picasso trigger, clown trigger and an undulated trigger.
mine used to eat full mullies at around 20cm, so dont let his size fool you.
mine was very tame and i could hand feed him, also very active and territorial of his cave (towards me only), he used to short out my power alot aswell with his splashing.
one more thing mine used to love the current, he would always swim right in front of the powerheads.

Cheers for the reply. So he shouldnt have much trouble mixing it with a clown trigger and some angels?

nar now that you mention it i had mine with an emperor angel aswell.
the only thing id say is get a smaller clown trigger than your grouper, those guys eat everything you throw in so i used to chop prawns for mine to keep em occupied then feed the panther at the top on either mullies or full prawns (too big for the triggers).
my triggers used to eat that much that there BOTTEM spine used to stick right out cause there guts were to big after a feed to keep em retracted

Still have mine in my reef tank. Is behaving with a few smaller fish so far. But he will be moved out in the next few weeks. Great fish, one of my favourites in the short amount of time that i've had it. Full of character! loves his food as well.
Will try get some pics soon.
