If i remember correctly, its used in this way:
Protomelas sp. Taiwan Reef, means that it is a Protomelas, undescribed or unsure of species name, coming from Taiwan Reef.
Protomelas spp. means all Protomelas species... i.e. Protomelas spp. are all open water utaka...
etc
Hope that helps, and hope I'm reasonably right there

Yup, you're right with the sp. (I've never seen spp.). I found out what it meant when researching labidochromis sp. "Hongi Island"

Yeah it basically means undeterminable species Genus. I have no knowledge what the acronim(?spelling) is for.
Most commonly in trade it means someone has pulled a rabbit from a hat and gone with it.
Also a good way of disguising a cross breed.
Undertermined species in some Genus like Pseudotropheus sp. and Haplochromis sp. and Aulonocara sp. are common as there are so many subspecies and location morphs (also subspecies actually BEING location morphs of the same fish) making a guess is sometimes not wise.
I have called Aulonocara sp. "Trade Name" (e.g. Royal Blue, Azure, Royal Yellow etc..) alot of times because being wrong on a trade name is not such a drama than if you dont make a good determination on species. Usually this happens when you order something like Aul. Jacobfrebergi and they look more like Aul. Hasbanche(?spelling) or the bloody "Eureka Reds" or something else and you really dont want all the "Thats not a Aul. Jacobfribergi" or whatever they rekon they have seen in a book once, determination from customers.
I let people make up thier owns minds what they are as in the end if you purchase the fish you are the one who ultimately ends up with the responsibilty for it regardless of what it actually is.
