There are several options other than the shops
mail order - especially for less readily available plants
swapping - you could try in the classified section of the forum or contact the various societies about members interested in plants.
gifts - most people who are interested in plants have to regularly prune. Particularly the rapid growing stem plants. If you ask them nicely
