I use this stuff. Not quite sand and not quite gravel. I like the extra weight of it. It doesn't get blown around the tank or siphoned out with water changes.
For a 4ft tank you would want about 8kg.
Product is: Pisces Aquarium Gravel - Diamond Black. About $40 for 10kg bag.

I have about 80KG of krystal black sand that I removed from my 6x2.5x2.5 about a month ago, it did have trumpet snails in it. If you want some ill sell it to you for $20 per 10kg.

No worries, if it's overrun by snails getting a snail eating fish is a better option. No amount of cleaning and gravel changing will get rid of trumpet snails, believe me I've tried as have many others
Has anyone tried liquid carbon (glut) dosing to get rid of them? I thought when I was dosing that it helped gradually get rid of them but idk. Might of been something else.
