I wouldn't bother with salt crystals, best bet is just to get the water delivered,

Darren the fish doctor is the best fella for northern suburbs and Dennis from ocean farms? Not sure exactly is best for southern suburbs

Hi smile.gif
Might I suggest that you research this endeavour carefully as I have picked up on some worrying points in your post. It seems to me that if you don't know what a hydrometer is, it suggests that you lack the knowledge at this stage required to successfully maintain a marine aquarium. I'd also suggest that you give people time to read your post and let you know if they have live rock, rather than posting the same question every few hours. You cannot house your live rock until your aquarium is running.

PS. Using capitals on the forum indicates that you are shouting wink.gif

Andrea, this is Sally's mum. You are talking to a 12 year old girl who is enthusiastic about a new hobby. I think it is commendable that she is trying to do this research on her own. Every other person has been positive towards the requests she has made.

I imagine that you probably didn't realize her age, but your comments are negative and enough to put anyone off being enthusiastic. You would be surprised how much she has learnt about starting up a marine tank, and how much money she has saved. Sally is paying for this set up herself. She needs to be encouraged in her endeavors and not made to feel bad about trying to learn.
She has both parents backing her in her interests. Maybe stop a minute and think about the effect your comments could have on other people...

Salstagurl, Andrea is giving you some advice; research heaps before taking the plunge into Marine...

Sarah, Marine is very different compared to freshwater fishkeeping and I believe Andrea is only trying to help your daughter realise that marine fishkeeping is not as easy as it looks/sounds.. smile.gif
To be honest, if someone that's new to the hobby then it is best to visit a reputable aquarium shop that stocks your preferred fish and have a chat with one of the staff. Buying from a "list" that someone gives you might not be ideal in some cases...
Eg: 20kg of substrate for a 2.5ft tank? That's like a third of the whole tank being covered in substrate! Also, 50kg of liverock for the same tank? That's ALOT of liverock for a tank that size! ohmy.gif

For marine, I recommend Vebas! smile.gif

I actually thought Andrea had been quite helpful, and nice about it too. hence the smiley faces.
(capital = shouting, smiley face = friendly)

Sally will find all the help she needs in this forum, all she has to do is ask smile.gif
And if you're worried about her age, in her profile she can fill it out and I think most ppl will be quite understanding, friendly and helpful.

I would also be skeptical about that much rock, i have about 160kg in my 900lt display.

I wouldn't say anything bad about most lfs but as you have mentioned this is a big investment for someone of sallys age, all her pocket and G'day money I'm guessing! If I was plunging in with all my cash I would grab more than one opinion and other than this forum and the Maswa forum, Pacco at Vebas is a friendly and helpful guy.

Salstagurl most people do an apprenticeship before jumping into marine e.g goldfish, tropical, cichlids and then marine. This builds up a good understanding on the importance of maintaining good stable water quality/chemistry.Marine are less forgiving than the others so if your skipping the apprenticeship i would read up as much as i could you can never know to much when it comes to fish keeping.Any way good luck with your endeavour.cheers steve.
