Ammonia was 1.14 this morning.

What happens when the water runs out of ammonia fr th bacteria to consume? Do they start dying?

What fish can I put in there that wot eat the plants but will be dirty enough to cycle?

I to am a past time fan of congo's.
They do keep the tank quite clean as well.
Great mid level fish that keep to their own usually and don't invade the space of others.
May have to be removed at breeding time if that avenue is planned for the birchir.

One small pink light(growlux)
One small blue light
Darkish background.
Really makes the congo's reflective mauves, greens, purple, orange and pinks go of.
A bit like a hologram in a way.

Thanks Ray, I'll pick some up on the weekend. Any idea what would be good numbers to start with to get the cycle going without killing them?

Compared to other Characins the Congo Tetra is one of the hardier ones.
They should be ok with a bit of a ammo spike.
I recommend use a little seachem prime to detox the ammo.
I would say six to begin is modest, big or small.

Just to add, congo's go absolutely nuts over small insects (flies, moths and what ever else)

Andrew
The bacteria level adjusts its self to the level of available waste, so do not add lots of fish do it gradually.
Why didn't anybody else answer this question?

Update:

Aquarium now has 9 x Congo Tetras, 1 x African Butterfly Fish, 1 x Peter's Elephantnose and 1 x Senegal Bichir.

Currently struggling with algae - running 2 x phosphate pads but it doesn't seem to be helping sad.gif

Just got the senegal on Tuesday (thanks Zach). Water quality isn't what I want it to be, and I don't think it's fully cycled but I'm doing 2 x water tests a day, small water changes where necessary, feeding sparingly (3 day fast at the moment) and doing triple doses of prime and dosing a little seachem stability.

Hope you guys like the pics (apologies for shocking iphone quality). Camera doesn't actually capture just how awesome the moonlights look smile.gif The water level is low because shots were taken during a water change. I sort of like the look though and will consider adding a few terrestrial plants to the background.

Also a huge thank you to Ollie, Terry, Stacey, Jules, Bowdy and Zach for their patience in answering so many of my questions smile.gif
