would you be referring to the fish's scientific names?

most of the fish we keep on this board have no "common" name so we call them by their scientific names. Kind of like saying
all people are alike,
or
all Homo sapiens are alike

ie Homo sapiens is the scientific name for humans

though as enthusisats we tend to convert fish's scientific names into a common or a simpler form eg. take Altolamprolgus calvus, everyone uses it's species name (calvus) as it's common name.

I'll take discus as an example coz you'r familiar with them
Discus are known scientifcally as Symphysodon aquefasciata for example.
The first part "Symphysodon" is the genus of the fish, like how humans and chimps are in the same familiy (Homo), under the correct international convention the genus is ALWAYS spelt with a capital and the second part (the species) is written in lowercase.

if you want me to try to resimplyfy that i'm sure everyone else will help out

LFS= Local Fish Shop
BS= Brine Shrimp
BBS= Baby Brine Shrimp (nauplii)
PCS= Perth Cichlid Society
F0= wild caught fish
F1= captive born fry of wild caught fish
F2= the offspring of the F1 fish.
L = Locaridae
LR= Live rock
LS= Live sand

this is all i can think of off the top of my head but others can probably expand apon it.

Hope this helps, it can get pretty confusing.
Elliot

ah I see.
A couple of weeks ago I was thinking of creating a list of forum and/or industry based acronyms for the newbies to the forum, or for those not familiar with our terms.
I'll try to get onto one asap, and maybe one of the mods, can make it a sticky :\

I'll also try to work in synonyms ie Brine Shrimp- Artemia
