So its the end of an era, I got home yesterday morning after spending two days up north to find old Jack dead in the back corner of the tank, my heart sank as i saw no gill movement.
It looks like we had a small power outage and my Sicce powerheads did not restart as they should have, i have had one aimed at the water surface to provide adequate aeration to the tank and have had the top off and the lids loose to keep the heat down.
Obviously without adequate aeration he has suffocated and died, I'm totally gutted as I've had him almost 5 years and have had him since about 5cm. We measured him yesterday afternoon and he came in at 55cm to the tail and 2.5kg.
So now I've got two big empty tanks at home, a 6x2x5x2.5 and a 4x2.5x2.
Pretty disheartened but gotta get back into it, not sure what to go for next or if i should get another baby jack...

Hey man that sucks! I reckon I speak for nearly everyone when I say I have really enjoyed this thread and watching the progress of your Jack.
I got some spare 3cm Murray Cod if you want a crack at cod again. If you want one PM me.

That is the worst...this thread inspired me to recently purchase a little 5cm specimen of my own. He/she is an absolute firecracker.

Cheers for the kind words guys, I'm glad this has inspired so many into wanting to keep Jacks, they are such a great fish that you cant truly appreciate until you've had one for yourself. They really are a special breed and have to be the most rewarding and fun fish to keep due to their ability to interact with everybody and how smart they are.
I never knew fish could be so clever till i got Jack, they only get better with age too so you guys have all got lots of good stuff to come.
I think i might have to get another one and bring the Jack tank back to its former glory
I'm burying Jack under an awesome white trunked desert gum tree that Imogen and I planted in the front yard last weekend, hopefully it will go nuts and itll serve as a good reminder of the old fella

It will probably eat all birds who try to nest in its branches

What a bummer Mr Jack. Might be a good idea to invest in a battery back up air pump Dave, for next time.

I was just talking to Imogen about buying a UPS the other day mate! I'm spewing I didn't act on it and get one sooner. Learned the hard way as usual!

A new era begins!
I had a message from Chris at Aquotix telling me they have a couple of small Jacks in stock and would I like to come and get one to which I replied yes, yes I would.
The end result is this little bloke, in a 1000L tank with two Mono Argents as dither fish and a new Gibby. He is already chasing the monos around at feeding time and filling his fat little belly full of NLS and New Era pellets that are meant for fish 3x his size. Ill hopefully get a grace period of no savage fish violence till the end of the year if I'm lucky.
At a whopping 2.5cm he is already a little menace, he has got some bloody big boots to fill but I'm already very attached to the little dude.
We took the attached photo whilst he was still in the bag, will try to get some more photos soon now that he is settling down, its difficult though with such a tiny fish in such a big tank!

Next on the purchase list for the tank is a battery back up unit!
I also got some other cool natives for the empty 4x2x2.5, I managed to get my hands on a Snakehead Gudgeon and a Butis Butis. I've also relocated my little barra who was occupying the Jack tank but might put it back when the Jack regains some size.
