Ok so I started setting up my new project on friday: A 6 foot Iwugami Amano-Style Aquarium!

It started with a somewhat comical-looking drive with a 6 foot plain pine stand (from Thang at Gosnells Aquariums) on the roof-racks on my little pulsar. I spent the next couple of days staining and varnishing and such. Now it's a light jarrah stain, and looking much nicer than boring old pine.

I picked up a 72" 8x39W T5HO light from Aquotix; great service and best use of PCS discount yet!

Since I recently got into Discus, I've moved the pressurised CO2 (also from Aquotix back when I got it) off of their tank to make them happier.

I then picked up a used Eheim 2217 from Mik in Forrestdale on saturday afternoon, the great part being that it's already cycled, and a reliable unit. It sat on the danio breeding tank until the 6 footer was set up.

The Tank we picked up on sunday, got it home and filled it up :-)

Now here's the sad part: I now know that I have to move house in 3-5 months. Major plan change, but things will work out for the best. I've decided to use the tank during these months to grow the huge amounts of plants required. According to rough calculations, it'll take about 2.7 square metres of HC (thanks to Kimbo for giving me some, you're a legend!) to cover what I want, as well as a few other plants. Of course, none of these are cheap, so it works out in my favour to grow as much as I can myself...

Setup details:
Tank: 72 x 14 x 18
Stand: Stained Pine
Lights: 72" 8x39W T5HO
Filter: Eheim 2217
CO2: 3.5kg Bottle
Current Fauna: 4 very very little SAE (extremely scared of massive algae bloom)
Current Flora: HC, Water Sprite (nitrate suckers)
Substrate: 1" Laterite (got a source lined up), then need some nice soil and have some black diamond sand coming from overseas.

Here are some photos:
- Tank On Stand

- Pitiful number of plants until I get paid :-)

- CO2 and Eheim

- Donated HC

The Plan (I'll draw a picture and upload it later) is to set it up in one hit if possible, once eough plants are grown.
Planned fauna are:
- Trigonostigma Espei (Espei Rasbora - kind of hard to find it seems)

- Crossocheilus Langei

- And maybe some Glass, Cherry or CR Shrimp

Planned flora are:
- Hemianthus Callitrichoides

- Glossostigma Elatinoides

- Eleocharis Acicularis

- and Blyxa Japonica

If you're not sure what the Iwugami style is, here are some examples:

More to come! It'll be interesting to see how fast I can get the plants growing...
If anyone has any tips or has something similar I can have a squiz at locally, I'd love to hear about it :-)

Unfortunately due to some other problems this tank project will not continue. It will now house my Discus, and I'll eventually put some more in with them so that they can have a better social structure and less stress (only 4 at the moment). Looks like just a driftwood & tied on plants with a bare bottom jobbie. Not the happiest with this but the health and safety of my Discus comes first.

How big are your discus now?

I just upgraded to a 2ft wide, cause i felt my discus where a bit strangled in my 18" wide tank,

I can't imagine keeping them in a 14" wide!

Anyways, glad to hear your keeping your discus well. :-)

There are only 4 of them at the moment. If the narrow tank becomes an issue it'll just have to be ugraded ...again... :j

The two adults are about 5/6", and the two juvies are about 4" (can't measure just now, I'm well underestimating smile.gif). I'm concerned about the runt so he's been getting special feeding away from the others. But I'm hoping that adding another 2 or so will help resolve the odd bullying issues.

What are some of the issues you found keeping yours in an 18" wide? If it's going to be a big issue I might have to grab one of the tanks from clearview aquariums (50" long x24" wide x18" high from memory with inbuilt trickle filter) since they're a cheap alternative..
